U-Haul and Budget Truck Rentals - Up to 30% Off

This is my first topic posted in the Hot Deals section. This is not really a super amazing deal or anything like that, but, as you know, when you're looking to save some money, anything can help.

I am moving my belongings from Phoenix, Arizona to Denver, Colorado and I was wanting to rent a truck from a renting service to move all of my belongings from the storage unit in a single trip. The price of gas continues to grow and I was dreading the prices that I would have to pay for both the truck and the gas, but I was surprised to find out that it really wasn't that bad.

I received a U-Haul 16" Moving Truck for $150.00 with roughly 1,000 miles discounted from $188.00 with about 850 miles. My total discount was 30% off the normal price.

U-Haul [uhaul.com] is one of the most well-known truck rental agencies. They are located nationwide and they would be the simplest for a move, but their prices and their mileage are far from being the best, so a friend recommended me Budget Truck Rental [budgettruck.com] with better prices, mileage, and hefty deposits and fees for anyone under the age of 24; additionally, Budget Truck Rental offers a 10% discount on its regular fee [budgettruck.com] for one-way movers! In addition, there is a 15% discount and 20% discount from my movers' packet that stacks with the 10% discount!

I wanted to stick with U-Haul to avoid the deposits and fees from Budget Truck Rental, so I called them up and price matched the Budget Truck Rental estimate: the 10% off, the 20% off, the price, and the mileage — everything went through perfectly. U-Haul does not have any heavy fees or deposits for drivers, so, like I said, this is an ideal move to make if you're trying to watch your cost or already had a deal with U-Haul.

To summarize, please refer to the following model:
  1. Are you moving? Go to U-Haul [uhaul.com] and Budget Truck Rental [budgettruck.com] and enter your information for your one-way move.
  2. At U-Haul, proceed through your reservation as normal. Review the reservation information: price, mileage, and any applicable fees. If you think that you may want to go with U-Haul over Budget Truck Rental, supply your payment information as requested. You will not be charged until the day of pick-up.
  3. At Budget Truck Rental, apply the 10% discount [budgettruck.com] and proceed through your reservation as normal. You should try to include the 15% off discount or 20% off discount, too. Review the reservation information: price, mileage, and any applicable fees. If you think that you may want to go with Budget Truck Rental over U-Haul, follow the instructions as requested. You will not be charged until the day of pick-up.
  4. Print out your estimates for reference.
  5. Compare and contrast each of the providers and pay closer attention to the one that you want to select. If you choose Budget Rental Truck, you're done! If you want to go with U-Haul, call them up, give them your reference number, and ask for a price match with Budget Truck Rental.
  6. U-Haul will match the price of Budget Truck Rental: discount, price, and mileage included.

I realize that this is not a big secret or anything like that, but I searched over the forums and found very little for Slick Dealers that might be moving, so I thought that I would post this little guide. I hope that it helps someone!

These are the coupon codes for Budget Truck Rental. Please use these for your move or use them to price match against their competitors:

Coupon Code MVG12
for 15% off Fri - Sat pick-ups

Coupon Code MVG13
for 20% off Sun - Thu pick-ups
in Travel & Vacations (4) U-Haul
If you purchase something through a post on our site, Slickdeals may get a small share of the sale.

If you call your local U-Haul, Budget, Ryder, etc., they are often able to reduce where the national 1-800 won't. I got my rental down another almost $400 by just playing the two local guys against each other. Had a reservation at both places, called to cancel at U-Haul, told them Ryder was cheaper, they beat them. Called Ryder to cancel, they beat U-Haul price. Well worth the 10 minutes on the phone. This was after haggling down the 1-800 people.

There is also a 15% discount for using AMEX.

thanks again guys.. I used the methods prescribed in this thread...and got a pretty steep discount..
one way trip 16' box truck from Penske - sacramento to Los Angeles for $180 out the door. unlimited miles.

I did opt for damage insurance, and they screwed me a bit on that..but still all-in-all the overall price was good. they tried to get me for $45 for damage waiver, I negotiated it down on the spot at the counter a bit... but honestly I think I could have got a better deal for the damage waiver from the 1800 sales reps during the initial negotiations.

during the negotiations I would call the reps on the 1800 number.. and they were all shocked at my price quote and said they had never seen that large of a discount before. my overall discount ended up being OVER 30% I cant remember exactly how much, but I think like 35% off

when I tried to beat the price with uhaul, they couldn't even come close to it.

only bad thing about the truck was that it didn't have cruise control, and it got 8mpg it was a ford, also it was uncomfortable, not much leg room and no way to recline the seat.

For new codes just Google Budget promo codes. I found a bunch one of which was %30 off. I worked pretty well other than uhal would not match the discount given by the promo code. Still saved about $180 so thanks for the advice.

Thanks for the idea. Did not really think about price matching. I am going from Portland, OR to San Diego. 26 foot truck and a tow dolly for our SUV. U-Haul price was 1323, with all taxes, disposal fee and insurance (Limited Damage, Cargo Insurance, and Towing Insurance. Penske had the same items for $822.88 after AAA discount. One caveat the Penske tow dolly could not handle an SUV.

So I called the U-Haul 1800 to cancel my reservation. Rep asked why, I said Penske crushed your price, and even though U-Haul was my first choice I had to go with Penske. She said "you know we price match don't you" I said "I did not know that Wink ". She put me in touch with the proper department. Guy said how much is Penske offering? I was honest and broke down the pricing including the AAA discount. Guy says, I can beat that, and brings it down to $750. So they cut off $537 just by asking.

Thanks OP. worship

Budget 30% off code U072806 from United, expires June 30, 2013.
I used the code on 3/28, they only gave 25% off. I did 285 miles move at $0.52/mile, better than Uhaul.

Uhaul with no negotiation or coupon was half the price of budget with coupon and begging in my town for a local move and I got 59c/mile instead of 79(only a 15 mile trip total). $39.99 26' truck .59c mile vs 79.99 24' truck 79c mile(then add coupon 25%)

I had the same situation on a 1 way move from Cleveland to Raleigh 3 years ago. Budget wasn't even close with coupons to Uhauls posted prices.

Yes Penske will probably price match depending on the quote. Definately try.

I did as I read on here or somewhere else (can't remember) and I got a call a few hours later. I went though the price quote and there was the page that said they could contact me. I put my info in and got a call a while later to see what they could do for me to make a reservation. I told them that budget had quoted me a lower price so I was going with them. on the Penske site I had been quoted 1,120. That wa with the online discoutn and AAA. They asked me what Budget had quoted. I said 879 (totally made up). They said they couldn't do that and wwent into their line about Penske guarantees the truck you reserved and that they would have a truck for me whereas Budget often doesn't have a truck for you when you go to pick it up. And that Penske trucks were newer. She asked what price I was aiming for since I said I had a budget. I told her under $1000 with tax included. She put me on hold and came back saying she couldn't but that she could do 978 which would be 1118 with taxes and fees. Wow! I didn't expect taxes to be that much! Just a heads up for others that didn't know. I did not make the reservation yet and will try again this week.

So I called back to the Penske number that had been left hen they called me and they looked up my reservation. I still wanted a bit better price. He said he really couldn't go lower. I said I had a budget to stay under with tax. He asked if my dates could be changed. I said no I already have my plane tickets. I asked hy and he said a week later there was more availability so the price was quite a bit cheaper (it fit in my budget with tax). it was 110 less. Then he proceeded to tell me if I book it I can call back at any time and change the dates to earlier or later and their policy is to leave the price the same. Smilie I went ahead and said I could do that. He asked about furniture blankets which I didn't need, and a dolly cart. I said I needed the cart and he said he couldn't give it to me for free but could make it a dollar! Then I thought what do I have to lose and asked if there was any way to get an extra day and he said sure! So I booked it, waited an hour and then called and changed it. Same price and all! In the end I saved 32%!!! Score!!! Definately worth putting in your info when getting a quote to get the call back. Smilie Good luck!
