The 2008-2009 preseason is about to kick off and I think it would be great if we could have a thread to chat about the hockey season. I think we should introduce ourselves!

I'd never laugh at a mutual hockey fan. I take that back...I do laugh at Ducks fans (Ottawa was robbed....ROBBED) and Panthers fans. But, can I at least laugh at Leonsis?

Why would you laugh at Leonsis? He's actually a pretty cool guy. I've met him several times. Heck, I can say I had the opportunity to be the first Caps fan to thank him personally for signing Ovechkin to a 13 year contract extension.

But if you want to laugh go ahead. We'll be getting the last laugh when we're hoisting the Cup in a year or two.

The Sabres got spanked by the Leafs last night. Thank God it's only preseason.

I hope.

Preseason doesn't mean a thing. I wouldn't panic yet.

I loathe Leonsis. The price he paid for Jagr and the subsequent scramble to sell him was hysterical. And, jumping on the cheerleaders bandwagon, which has no place in hockey. Not to mention he signs one of the best young stars and attendance is still in the bottom 1/3 of the league. Coming from an area where the Bell Centre is full nearly every game, the lack of Leonsis' ability to get fans in seat even with Ovechkin is laughable.

Even if the Caps do win the Cup, exactly where will that put the tally? I believe it would be...1. And, exactly how many Cups have the Habs won? Oh, right...24!

People talk a lot about winning this many or that many... it just makes it that much sweeter when one of us teams that hasn't won one ever, such as the Caps or hasn't won one since the early 70's (my B's).

I've got a lot of respect for the Habs, but they still haven't won a cup since before I was born. laugh out loud

It's not even fair to try to compare Washington with Montreal. Montreal has been around a lot longer than the Caps have and had a lot more chances to win the Cup. And they've had great teams over the years and been deserving of the Cup. No arguments there.

Attendance was crappy over the last few years in DC for several reasons: DC is not a hockey town & the Caps were terrible. However that is not the case this season. Ticket sales are WAY up. I'm a season ticket holder and they've added about 3000-4000 more since last season. Sure, we're not Montreal, but considering how low attendance was a few years ago it's a vast improvement.

The media in DC only cares about two things: Congress and the Redskins. It's laughable how little coverage we get for everything else. Most people didn't know who Ovechkin was for a long time. He's getting to be known around town now.

Leonsis made a lot of mistakes during the first few years he owned the Caps. But he also was trying to bring a winning team to DC. Bringing in Jagr for 3 prospects, two of which never made it in the NHL was a gamble that he tried. Unfortunately Jagr just didn't work out like everyone hoped. The firesale before the lockout was awful to watch. But look at the team now. Most of the guys that were traded away turned into a lot of the core members of the current team. While I agree Leonsis made a mistake with that, he was trying to bring a winning team to a city that's been hurting for a championship since 1993.

Personally I'd love to see a game at the Bell Centre. It would've been much better in the old Forum in Montreal but I was too young and didn't have the money. Right now I don't have the money to go up there, attempt to find a ticket, and go to a game. I was rather pissed when Montreal couldn't get past Philly this year. They would've given S**tsburgh a run for their money.

Is it October 4 yet? I hate off-season. Bring on hockey dangit.
