Beginner needs help choosing which compact camera to buy!

106 14 June 4, 2017 at 10:01 AM
Hello everyone. I am looking to purchase a compact camera in the range of $600-$700. I see some good options that had good reviews on some websites. I am a beginner with camera's and don't have much knowledge with them. So a simpler camera to use would be a big plus. I have a newborn and this camera would be used mostly to shoot him and my wife would love to take nature photos outdoors. So what I would think I am looking for is a simple, point and shoot ready camera that offers great quality pictures.

Some options I have found in my price range are:

Sony RX100 lll, Panasonic Lumix LX10 or LX100, Panasonic Lumix ZS100, Nixon Coolpix P900, Canon G7 X Mark ll.

Those are the best options I could narrow it down to myself, unless someone can mention anything else that could possibly be better.

Thanks for all the responses and help in making me purchase the right camera for my family's needs!

Those are different cameras and I wouldn't even group them in the same breath. Do you really need a 83X camera to take pictures of your newborn? Do you not live on the same street?

For you intended purposes, I would trim the list down to the RX100 and the LX10. While I prefer the RX100s in general, in this case between the MK3 and the LX10 I would go with the LX10 due to it having 4K video. That is if video is important to you. If not, RX100 all the way.

I find it hard to spend $500+ on a point and shoot / compact cam given when a budget DSLR runs + better photos.

You'll probably use your cell phone camera more than any other camera you have.

There is a lot of truth in that. I have a DSLR which comes out about once a month (maybe.) The problem is that it is bulky and you have to carry it, whereas your cell phone is always in your pocket at a moments notice.

That being said, when you want a really nice picture, the DSLR is nicer than the cell phone.

Oh, check out the manufacturer refurbs. I have had a lot of luck with two different Canon refurbs and they fit in your budget.
This is right in your price range, and has a great all purpose lens (I recommend something like this rather than the 18-55 and 55-250 combo as it is one less thing to carry around.)

Ask yourself this: what can a $600-$700 camera do that a $200-$300 can't do? If you can't answer that question, without googling, then you as a self proclaimed beginner don't need a $600-$700 camera.

Composition and lighting are key, and while a more expensive camera has more bells and whistles, better SNR, possibility to shoot RAW, etc. as a self proclaimed beginner you really don't need that.

His google skills are obviously busted, as he came to the lounge looking for advice.

The RX-100 I see alot of Vloggers using that family of cameras as they offer pretty good autofocus (On the new ones) in video mode, do good low light and one some models offer 4k video. I don't have personal experience with it but given it's price I would assume it has much more capability then a basic Point and shoot. It's also a bit larger then a modern point and shoot, so I don't think you will be slipping it into a front pocket.

I do think for your budget you should look at DSLR's. That said a basic DSLR will come with a slower lens (Less light = Higher F number) and you will probably want something faster for lower light and in the future fast moving kids. That said a DSLR will be larger, heavier but will be a much more capable platform if you or your wife are interested in learning more then auto mode.

If you're a camera n00b, don't get an SLR.

The P&S family of cameras do a lot of post processing in camera for you to make the pictures look vivid. With an SLR, you have so many knobs to set to get the picture just the way you want (unless you want to spend time post processing).

The RX-100 family has long been regarded as one of the top compact cameras. I find the model number scheme /ii/iii/iv... a bit irritating. Personally I'd rather go for something a little bigger like the Sony Alpha a6000.

Iagree
So many people going out to get an SLR just because they know they've heard people say SLR when talking about cameras.

as much as i agree with you.... once you learn the basics of manual photography, the relationship between the settings, it is pretty easy to just toss the camera in a priority mode, set the iso and be left with one setting (app or shutter speed).

for 600-700 you probably won't get a complete kit of lenses though. and it's bigger and bulkier to travel with. i'd totally go the p&s route for a kid though. it is more likely to get a better picture than an amateur slr user. and at the end of the day, it's more important to capture the moment than have fun shooting.

personally, i enjoy it more so that's what i have
