Adding IMEI does not unlock the phone. Basically, Sprint has a database of allowed devices on their network. If the phone is not on the database, then it needs to be added.
If you login to Sprint, you can purchase a new phone to add a line to your plan:
My Sprint>Upgrade Eligibility>Add A line tab>Continue>Add a device> You will see: You're shopping to add a device to share minutes.
The best deal is the Pre-own Iphone 6S. The S8 and Iphone 7 have 18-month lease at great discount but you don't own the phone. I have not try it because the current BB Iphone SE is cheaper at $4.99/month for adding a line. My order at BB is still pending.

I needed a phone quick and bought a G4 Play at best buy thinking today was the last day to sign up. Then I was thinking of not picking that up and going with the E4 instead. But NOW if my existing tribute hd works already I'll just go with that and save some bones

I am guessing it's not automatic for Tello as well because a lot of people who switched from Tello still have to get the PLBL flag manually change to SPCS.
