I checked the number and IMEI on Sprint's website and it was rejected.
Anyway to get this phone accepted or is it dead in the water?
or do I have to actually activate that phone on Verizon?
What about an older Moto G (4G LTE...1st or 2nd generation) from Cricket?

What is the model number/part number?

I did a couple of Sprint deals earlier this year, but ported out afterwards to close out (had line open for 3-4 months). In the process I ended up with 3 Sprint SIMs.
I decided to get in on the BYOD deal before it expires, and reactivate 3 lines of service on the SIMs I had, by porting in GV & FP numbers. However, I currently do not have any unlocked / Sprint phones on hand (all passed on to family offshore). But I had all the IMEI numbers of the phones, all of which are eligible.
So, I called the number 866 number above and spent an hour on the phone with the rep, giving him all the information (SIM ICCIDs, IMEIs, phone numbers, account numbers, PINs, etc.). In the end he put the order though successfully and I got an email saying welcome to Sprint. Everything till this point was all good.
Now the complication:
I assumed that the lines would just get activated and be sitting ready to use and waiting till I actually got hold of a phone to use the service eventually. However, it looks like to actually complete the port, I do need physically pop the SIMs in to the associated phone and turn on, based on the port status message below, for all 3 lines. Otherwise it appears I may not even get set up in the system and be able to operate my account online.
Also, is there a time limit within which I need to complete the port or risk it being cancelled?
NO
Has anyone gotten a Verizon Galaxy S8 to work with this plan?
I should also add that it must be unlocked. https://www.gottabemobi

Any creative suggestions on how I can get past this and activate the lines? Looks to me like I might have to find and pester friends to borrow their Sprint compatible phones and then call in to switch IMEIs and activate.

Don't have to activate anything on Verizon.
Yes, the hardware is identical. If you are an advanced/experienced phone user, just flash it to XAA/XAA/SPR or XAA/SPR/SPR to enable firmware support for all Sprint bands (you can mix and match firmware files) and then ask Sprint to add the IMEI onto the Sprint database.
