So I was on with CSR chat and asked about the upgrade date changing to 2 years and the following is what chat said in response. I probalby will not do an upgrade but if it helps anyone else.

Rose M.: I check it here, your account may have started the service last July and normally it is 24 months to be able to upgrade but no worries I check here since you are under the promotion to upgrade by October 1 2017,no worries all you need to do is to call 866 782 8777 for the dedicated team and for direct assistance for upgrading phone.

Rose M.: You can upgrade to a new Sprint phone on Sprint Flex after 10/1/17 and continue to enjoy their free year of service. Any upgrades before 10/1/17 will require a plan change to Unlimited Freedom and customer will lose the remaining free months in their year of free service plan.
great..thanks for information... so why upgrade only to lease? is sprint flex not a lease... do we have other upgrade options from 1-oct?

I really never asked that question. I am taking it you mean to buy a phone outright from sprint with discount or other vendor and transfer the number over. I think you probably could but would call this number first to verify. 866 782 8777.

In fact going through the transcript they never really answered my original question of what if my phone died could I buy a new one and keep the free plan.

i'm sure this question has been answered, but at over 10k comments, it's tough to go thru. If I buy the new iphone X in an apple store unlocked, will that count as a "phone upgrade"?

If you signed up for the offer before 8/1/17, you can upgrade to a new Sprint phone by leasing or purchasing it in monthly installements after 10/1/17, and you'll still enjoy your free year of service. Any upgrades prior to 10/1/17 will require a plan change to Unlimited data, talk and text and you'll lose the remaining free months in your year of free service.

If you signed up 8/1/17 or later, you can upgrade to a new Sprint phone by leasing or purchasing it in monthly installements after 12/1/17, and you'll still enjoy your free year of service. Any upgrades prior to 12/1/17 will require a plan change to Unlimited data, talk and text and you'll lose the remaining free months in your year of free service.

The answers are in the FAQ's on the sprint free unlimited for a year sign up page.
Doesn't anyone read what they are signing up for anymore?

I agreed reading is fundamental:-) But, I guess everyone's question is, including myself, why Sprint account online shows different upgrade date than one in FAQ. For example, per my account, my earliest upgrade is 8/1/2019 (~2 yrs from now), which is supposed to be 11/1/2017 for me. Inquired multiple CSRs, none of them had any clue. My best educated guess is, this BYOD deal is not available for regular agents.

Hopefully it is 10/1. Per https://www.macrumors.com/2017/09...re-orders/, Sprint is least popular carrier for Iphone 8. There is a good chance people could buy Sprint-branded Iphone by then.

My Post at 9993 is from CSR agent today. So since I joined in July I should be able to upgrade on 10/1/17 even though my date says July 1 2019 but I have to call 866 782 8777. Do not really want to cut and paste or quote my own post. But it has more information from the chat in that post.

You asked if upgrades were for leases only. They are supposed to be for lease or device payments. I would be more concerned if upgrades are only thru Sprint directly since they usually suck compared to places like Best Buy and Target. I had that problem on Sero plan.
My account shows 2019 too but no one will really know for sure what will be available until 10/1/17.
Since phones are such depreciating assets there will always be slickdeals with or without buying from Sprint.
