When I ran my unlocked Galaxy S8+ through the checker, it said it wasn't eligible. Then when I called they said that it only works with Verizon S8+ phones. I have a feeling the reps don't know the promotion very well themselves.

got an unlocked iphone 7 (verizon model) and called to switch current sim from my iphone 6S to the iphone 7. The rep said I needed a new sim card because the sim card I have is not compatible with the iphone 7. Is that right?
Yes. Learning Sprint myself. Each model works only on certain SIM card. Just order it and it will be fine

They are sales staff and all they know is how to type the IMEI into their system and to guess at the meaning of the ambiguous wording in the offer.

That particular model is explicitly listed as eligible. If it was on an mvno, you need to get the ownership flag reset to SPCS. Or maybe the phone number you gave is not eligible. Otherwise you will have to get them to look into it. Do not call it "unlocked model." Call it "S8+ Special Edition" when talking to them which is how it is listed on their eligibility list.

I have a suggestion:

Try to check your IMEI on this website - https://ting.com/byod

Once you get a message that your device it eligible, wait a few minutes and check again on the Sprint's website.

Once that is done call them and now it should be eligible.

I did that for an unlocked GS8+ and it worked for me.

my plan is "40GB Better Choice XXL" but since it doesn't say unlimited data.. that kind of worries me a bit?
Port your number out. It took me a month of calling for them to switch to the free plan.

1) Refer to the Ting link in the wiki under the sim card section. It tells you which SIM card is compatible with which phone model. Skimming through it quickly, it appears anything compatible with a 6s also works with a 7.
2) From personal experience, one sprint chat rep told me "sim not compatible with phone. get another one", even though I knew it was. I closed chat and tried again later and the next rep gave me no trouble at all.

I have no idea what you are referring to in terms of "messing up". You have to use the phone if you are using your own sim card. That is noted in the wiki. There is no problem with it. I always do it over the phone and so do a zillion others.

LISTEN to the final deal when they read it to you at the end of the call and if it is not right say so and make them redo it until it is!.
I have taken sim cards from Apple (free) and called the phone number listed and ported four lines. Setup the plan correctly on 1st line then reconfirm it, ask them to send it over email. Look at the order over email and then proceed to next phone .. one by one is what worked for me.

Use tello's Boyd checker to check imei and then it allows you to put sim iccid# and validates it too..
