I will go out on a limb and say that, there is no need for a Sim Free version; Here's why:

1. preordered an iPhone X indicating Sprint as my carrier and providing one phone number from my 3 BYOD lines. On Nov 3rd, picked up the phone at an Apple store.

2. (after quite a bit of run around about whether the phone is locked or not; hours with Sprint, Apple store/Genius bar etc..) just went through activation process, which was just entering my PIN number. Phone displayed a message indicating it is 'unlocked'.

3. tried Verizon and AT&T sims successfully.

4. Went to my Sprint account, went through the initial steps of switching device for one of my lines; entering iPhone X IMEI; Looked like it would go through; I didn't complete it though (because I want to retain my current device on that number).
did you pay $30 upgrade fee from Sprint?

No. Because, I never established a new line with Sprint (I have 3 BYOD lines with them, paying less than $10/month total bill). I just wanted to demonstrate that if I want to, I can switch a line to iPhone X.

As it stands, I just own the iPhone X without any carrier associated with it; I can just pop in any Sim (any carrier) and use it; this makes it very handy, when I travel domestic/international.

Sprint.

paid in full online and picked up at the store. When you order online, you have to specify carrier and provide phone number.

Confirmed, nexus 5 works. 1) nexus5, must be on the Google stock ROM, marshmallows . You can get the stock image on the Google main website. 2) use this SIM card, Part# SIMGLW226R.

I also have tried many non-stock ROMs on my Nexus 5. LTE worked, but phone calling and texting did not work.

In my case, I haven't seen anything in my Sprint account about any $30 upgrade fee. You may want to check with Apple/Sprint to make sure you don't get charged; unless you are adding another line; even in that case, I have seen this popup message, when I sign into my account: (this has been there for quite a while; even before iPhone X)
"Save $30 | Waived upgrade fee when you click or call"

"Save $30 upgrade fee" beside iPhone x. I saw that yesterday.

Upgrade fee usually shows up on your next bill. If upgrade fee is currently waived on sprint.com, you can ask Sprint to credit it back to you, usually shows as "discretionary credit" on your bill instead of "upgrade fee refund."
