Thanks! What do I need to give them in order to get it white listed? Just the IMEI?
That should be it to my knowledge yes.

Thanks! Will they do that without knowing anything about my account? That seems like the safest bet.

My bigger issue may be that the phone is probably locked to Cricket... I was going to switch to cricket and had bought the phone through cricket before I had seen this promotion.

Anytime after you first phone is actually activated.
The list AND and any other unlocked phones (without financial obligation) that are approved for Sprint Postpaid.

Some have mentioned H2O as an inexpensive way to port in a number to (it was said can port a number in to them without funding). How about Port Out FROM them later if you care about the number? Is H2O a good/cheap way to temporarily "park" a number, or are there better options?

H2O cheapest plan is $10 for 90 days(5cents/minute or sms text) and will need to be active to get account# and pin for port out. Tmobile $3 per month $10minimum(10 cent/minute or text). Cant get much cheaper than $10 these days. I think you can keep number on tmobile for 30 or 60 days without funding and still port out.
I still have numbers from 2 years ago on ring.to that doesn't charge for parking but they stopped allowing port ins over a year ago.

H2O has cheap SIMs (penny on Amazon or 2 for 99 cents on eBay) -- not sure if you can port out of H2O without funding (min $10 refill)

TMo has $10 SIM kit on Amazon or maybe free SIM from Apple store -- you can port out without funding TMo prepaid accounts (min $10 if you need to use TMo service)

So T-Mobile will let me Port IN a number when creating an account even if I don't fund it?

Yes I ported in a Sprint number, then ported back to Sprint next day without funding. There is a time limit though on how long you can have number at T-Mobile inactive. Either 30 or 60 days(not sure).
I personally would stick with tmobile over h20 due to h2o customer service if there are port out problems.

Yes -- TMo system is designed to create the account first so the funds have a place to go but you don't have to add funds

Unfunded account remains active for 30, 60 or 90 days -- I think its 90 days but I wouldn't leave a number that you care about unfunded for that long (under 30 days just to be safe)

Just hopping on to this deal -- will Sprint-locked phones work with this (provided they pass FED, etc)?
Sprint postpaid does not honor MVNO determinations that are based on FED. Most (close to all) prepaid Sprint phones are not accepted. All the Volts and HD Tributes etc. that were sold for prepaid use will not activate on postpaid despite the fact that they cleared FED for MVNO purposes on RingPlus, Ting, etc. and activate fine there.

However Sprint phones sold originally for use on Sprint postpaid (they can tell from their records) can be activated, provided they are free and clear on Sprint's books, except that they also will be rejected if ever used since on an mvno until you get the ownership flag set back to its original value of SPCS. This can be done by LiterallyUnlimited (or Sprint *if* you get through to the right people). This only works for phones sold originally for postpaid.

I do have a Tribute HD activated on this plan but my prepaid Tribute HD's could not be activated (FED cleared notwithstanding).. I had to search far and wide to get one on Ebay that was sold for postpaid originally. The ones sold for postpaid were sold at a much higher price than the ones for prepaid and Sprint is very vigilant to avoid leakage of low cost prepaid phones onto postpaid. You are not going to get around it by swapping them on either.

Does anyone know if you actually need to have your phone on you to activate the SIM? As long as I have the SIM and IMEI can Sprint activate my BYOD line?

I want to add a paid line to get the Essential phone but don't want to miss out on the free year and don't have my phone that's Sprint eligible on me at the moment.

Some have done it but they may be suspicious if you say NO when they ask if you have the phone there with you, as some people are selling their lines to others. You are supposed to already own the phone. You can try at least. I would not give them the IMEI of a phone that might be listed elsewhere in paid status.

Also Sprint does not "activate sims". That is the way other carriers operate. Sprint activates IMEI's (the sim is incidental on Sprint although it has to be correct). You cannot simply move a sim from one phone to another and keep the account active without dealing with the status of the IMEI's at the same time.
