Guess they are finally valuing their service quality at zero dollars!! Having unfortunate experience of being a sprint customer, I wholeheartedly concur with the valuation of their service.

Hi! I have ten specific questions that only pertain to my individual circumstances. I epitomize laziness and my sense of entitlement is impervious to reason. Therefore it is the responsibility of anyone and everyone who reads this to find the answers to my questions.

Signed up right around the 29th of Dec I think, took till the 4th for the SIM to arrive despite paying for overnight shipping charge. Was switching from H20 wireless, after 2 days of no service, went to a Sprint store; after 2 1/2 hours or more of waiting/getting helped...they flashed my phone because it (Moto G4 unlocked Amazon version) was not letting them put it on Sprint. In the process they messed up my 64 GB Mini SD card and I ended up loosing 25+ GB of data including my SMS texts, Pics, and Contacts.

Smart associate had backed them on my SD card before flashing the phone, only reason I got my pics and contacts back was because they were also backed up on my Gmail acct as well. I tried 2-3 days to fix the SD card to retrieve the lost data and finally just got tired and reformatted it. All this pain and suffering and nothing much to show for, oh yeah a 1 year of free service minus taxes etc! Hopefully the connection/service is better than what I experieneced in the last 10 days or so

Thx again. Regarding this part...

"If the number is in Ting GSM side, there is no problem, If the number is now on Ting Sprint side, you just need to port it to Ting GSM side or to another carrier as an intermediate step."

Is there any way I can validate whether my number is currently on Ting Sprint vs. Ting GSM? And if necessary, how would I port it specifically to "Ting GSM side"?

Or the alternative method you mentioned, porting to another carrier as an intermediate step, is that what this part of the wiki is explaining?

Using Tmobile $3 for porting:

Either buy a new, unused, unactivated tmobile sim card from Ebay, (The seller I bought from was 3.50 but now 3.75, but something like item number 263416268342 would work) or get one from apple store possibly free. If you need your phones to work with talk or texting while with t-mobile you will need refill cards. When I got the sim cards, I just put the sim card in a phone and try making a call and it goes to T-mobile with voice prompts. (don't have one, new activation, Port my number, and new requests I think are the prompts I used. When you get to a live person, tell them your interested in bringing your number from sprint and activating T-mobile prepaid. (They may transfer you to t-mobile prepaid activated department). They asked what plan and I said the pay as you go plan, and when asked about payment I said I was getting refill cards locally after I was sure the number ported as refill cards are not returnable. ( I only did 2 numbers at a time)
why don't you try checking your phone and imei number on Sprint's 1 year free byod eligibilty checker.... if your phone number or imei number is not eligible, you are on Ting's Sprint side.

Hi, thanks for the suggestion. The current phone I'm using with Ting is showing ineligible on the eligibility checker (which isn't a surprise because it's not on the list of eligible devices), but I've ordered an unlocked Moto E4 Plus that arrives tomorrow, which is the device I'd like to bring over to Sprint with the 1 year promo... so my question/dilemma is whether to first activate the E4 with Ting, or first activate it with T-Mobile as an intermediate step (per the wiki), or try taking the new device directly to Sprint & try porting my number over from Ting... which loops back to the question of whether my current number is on the Ting Sprint vs. Ting T-Mobile side.

I'll probably try the direct route first and then go from there.

A separate question, in case anyone has thoughts or first hand experience with this type of scenario - I currently have a Sprint account that my wife's phone is still active with the old school SERO plan. Her contract ended last month so it seems like the "wiki T-Mobile port out, jump back in with BYOD" would be a perfect option there. So what I'm kicking around in my head is...

1. First off, back to the original topic with the BYOD plan, can I take advantage of the BYOD promo by adding my new device (and number from Ting) to my *existing* Sprint account that has one active SERO line? Or am I going to need to create a separate Sprint account? In other words, can you have two lines on the same Sprint account that have different plans (SERO for one; BYOD promo for the other)?

2. Depending on the answer to #1, should I first port out my wife's current Sprint # using the T-Mobile wiki method (effectively canceling my Sprint service), then basically be starting from scratch with Sprint and try to utilize the BYOD promo both with her device (iphone 6) and mine (E4), so that it would be two lines on the same account with the same plan.

At the end of the day I'll be thrilled if I can get two lines/phones set up with Sprint BYOD. I realize this is something I probably just need to jump on and plow my own path, but I'd again appreciate any advice anyone might have about potential missteps I'd be taking.

For #1, go to your Ting account and click on "your account" then "device settings"...mine says Ting GSM Sim. If yours say GSM then you are golden. But if you have an older phone I would think you are CDMA. Just my guess. If you are CDMA, then you are on Sprint and as suggested by other knowledgeable SD'ers you need to port to a non Sprint carrier and port back in. If your current phone uses a sim card it will most likely be GSM. Another way to find out is to ask them on chat whether you're GSM or not. If you're CDMA you can ask chat if you can be moved to GSM by registering your E4's imei number with them. If yes you need to order a sim card and use that sim on your E4.

#2 to be eligible, number has to be a port in from a non Sprint (and non Sprint mvno) carrier and has to be a new account. Meaning if social security number is in use, you need have to open a new account a new social security number (your wife perhaps). So you need to port out wife's number to T-Mobile, or Ting GSM which is also T-Mobile and port back in to your newly created Sprint byod account.

And Damn it as mentioned above the byod page is down right now. Let's hope they have not discontinued this promo yet.

Very helpful - thanks! (and the promo link loaded fine for me just now)

So checking my Ting device settings it does show CDMA, just as you suspected. So I'm gonna try the following...

1. Order a Sprint SIM card to have in hand ready to use
2. Order a T-Mobile SIM card off ebay; use it to activate my unlocked E4 with T-Mobile (porting my # over from Ting)
3. Contact the sprint promo # to set up new account, utilizing my E4 to get in on the BYOD promo (porting my # over from T-Mobile)

If all goes well, then I'll port out my wife's current Sprint number (using step #2 above) and then try step #3 again to add a 2nd BYOD line with her iphone 6, on the same newly created account from my E4.

Something tells me I'll hit at least a snag or two somewhere along the way, but regardless this thread has provided a ton of great info!

I signed up couple of days ago, and got my first bill today. I am signed up for auto-pay, and my current charge (for only 1-day) is $2.39. Does this seem about right?

On 2nd thought, for a iphone 6 purchased a couple years ago from Sprint (which has to be CDMA right?), would I be able to port out to T-Mobile (GSM) and then back to Sprint w/ BYOD?

Or in other words, if I have a Sprint-branded iphone 6 that is currently active with Sprint (not under contract), what's the most efficient way to port out and then go right back to Sprint via the BYOD promo? Is that possible?

You never need to port out a PHONE to a non-Sprint carrier. You port NUMBERS and just activate PHONES,

Phones are not ported, just activated - they can always be moved if compatible without any intermediate steps other than deactivating them wherever they are now if it is on Sprint now. The history of the phone does not matter, with certain exceptions regarding mvno's or financing etc.

It is NUMBERS that are ported and are required to be.

The third important element is SSN's. Only NEW CUSTOMERS (based on account holder SSN) are eligible for thos plan. If you or your wife or other person opening a plan currently has another Sprint account, that SSN is ineligible period. If the person had a Sprint account, even largely inactive but still on the books, in the past 45 days, they are ineligible under their own SSN..

Thanks for the reminder that porting is about numbers and not devices.

OK, so starting from the end of your reply and working back...

The active Sprint account is under my SSN, so the new account would be established under my wife's SSN who has never had her own account w/ Sprint, so I think we're in the clear there for BYOD promo.

Back to porting, sorry for my ignorance on the topic but I'm still fuzzy about how to proceed with the active Sprint iphone 6. I understand I need to port out the NUMBER and then bring it back on a NEW account to have a shot at the BYOD promo. But here's where my ignorance kicks in...if I order a T-Mobile SIM card, I assume I then need to activate the DEVICE with T-Mobile, in order to be able to meet the promo requirement of porting in a number from a different carrier...but my limited knowledge is telling me I won't be able to pop a T-Mobile SIM card into a Sprint/CDMA iphone 6 in order to achieve the T-Mobile activation step. Is that accurate or am I off base? If accurate, is there another intermediate option you can suggest?

the Iphone 6 is the thousand dollar question. lol. why don't you check t mobile's byod checker if your iphone 6 qualifies.

https://www.t-mobile.com/bring-yo...kYourPhone

if it qualifies you can go ahead with ordering the T-Mobile pre paid sims. if her phone does not qualify, you need to find a GSM imei number so you can "pair" your wife's Iphone to it and use that number to register with T Mobile or Ting so you can "deactivate" your wife's Iphone from the Sprint account. Your E4, is it all good, is it an eligible device on Sprint's byod checker? You can plug in the E4's imei and any fake non Sprint phone number (maybe use the ones on your contact list) to check if it is eligible.

You do not necessarily need to stick in the sim. You do not necessarily need to activate the DEVICE on TMobile or at all. You probablly have to give TMobile some IMEI for opening the account just so they can help you know that it will work but it can be any IMEI that they will accept.

You do not have to actually activate any device on TMobile and there is no point doing so.

Just check and see if they will give you an account with any IMEI you have. - if they will not, you will have to come up with some imei number of a broken or old GSM-capable phone they will accept.

First I would try any phone IMEI you have (even active or broken) on Ting's checker and see if they would hypothetically activate it on their GSM side to go with your number. If so, you can just do it all on Ting. I do not know but they might. Mybe they would move the number to their GSM side for porting out even without a working phone. They are very helpful. You can ask them for suggestions. They know about what you are trying to do.
