Never sign up this deal by calling Sprint or store. If you called and india guy/girl said this deal is not available now, he/she will sign you up in a plan temporairly and promised they will switch you back to the free plan, please don't believe them.

Is there a contract? I assume you can't cancel after the first year without paying a penalty? How much is the penalty?

I signed up by calling Sprint and it worked just fine. If you buy your own SIM instead of having Sprint ship you one (my phone needed a Sprint SIM), calling is the only way to do it.

I used Tello last year on the Sprint network. No big problems with reception where I used it. The Sprint 1year free isn't exactly a big commitment - $3.20/month for me including fees. It's not even a contract according to the Sprint rep - I could cancel tomorrow. But even if it were a 1 year commitment - $38.40 tops to cancel if I just paid for a year and move to someone else.

You can port from any non-Sprint carrier
Quote from ms2000 :
What happens after the one year?
After 1yr it starts billing you full price -- you can stay and pay for service or just port out your number to another carrier when you feel like leaving

I've been using Sprint on this deal since July. Nothing has changed with this company in the last 7 years in NE Ohio/Western PA. Sure they upgraded from 3G to 4G but same quality of service. It's just faster now in the places that it does work. Sprint doesn't own their towers any longer....at least from what I recall. I only mention this because it's like their service doesn't know how to switch from one tower to the next on some occasions. This happens a lot to me in the city of Pittsburgh. I'm confident it can't be a dead zone. I'm using a factory unlocked s8+ so it's not one of their phones, but it shouldn't matter in this day and age.

There have been many times where I'm like this isn't worth it, but then I go back to the $2.80 bill. My savings have paid for my s8+ that I will happily take back to Cricket in June or use this quality post paid port from Sprint on a deal with another carrier.

The ONLY reason I've been able to get by with Sprint is because I have an AT&T Mobley hot spot when I travel.

There ought to be a new thread with what we feel their service is worth once the freebie is up.
If I could name the price I would pay it would be $20 with tax included. Same features.
Some Sprint apologists would scoff at that but for $35 at Cricket I can drive 60 miles from Ohio to Pitt through Pitt's tunnels and have 0 dropped calls. $20 is what it's worth...

Is it possible to add a 2nd new line (new phone, ported in number) to an existing Sprint free BYOD plan once the first phone line is set up WITHOUT CALLING (i.e. through the Sprint web interface)?

I can't see a way to do that. But figured someone here will know the answer if there's a trick or if I've overlooked something.
