I've been on my free plan for 4 months now and I'm looking to upgrade my phone. Can I buy a iphone x "locked to sprint" from ebay and it'll work and won't effect my free plan?

I see that the promotion now runs through 4/19. My in-law is on this plan and has been for a long time. Is there a way she can re-up to restart the year?

Thanks.

What if there is money owing or it is on some payment plan?
What if it was bought originally from Boost or Virgin subject to their locks?
etc.

It seems to me there are a variety of circumstances where this might not be clear sailing. There may be workarounds. I think you would want the IMEI or at least the GSX report at a bare minimum.

By the way "upgrades" are not allowed on this plan except through the web site or phone. IMEI swaps (or additional line activations) are allowed if you already own the new phone outright not subject to any locks. I know you did not mean "upgrade" in Sprint's sense but I am just mentioning fyi what they will say if you use the word "upgrade."

Port out in afternoon/evening to a non-Sprint prepaid carrier -- port back in next morning using a diff SSN (someone else in the household) on a new free account

If you want to port back under same SSN then you need to be away from Sprint for 45 days to be considered a new customer

You can buy Sprint-locked phones and device swap them on your existing free plan -- just make sure you have the correct Sprint SIM for the new phone

Buy the phone from a seller with good feedback -- you don't want a stolen phone or a phone with defaulted/unpaid Sprint balance

You will have to get one of the following to add the phone's IMEI to the database:
- Call the 8777 number during the daytime and ask them to escalate it to add the IMEI
- Ask on https://community.sprint.com/ They can do it.
- Ask at a Sprint Repair Center near you or a store manager of a corporate owned store. You can take along a printout of that thread in Community.
So, I wrote this a week ago, begging Sprint to put a perfectly usable nexus 5 on their database. I have spent about 8 hours on it. Went to a Sprint repair center store...they were clueless. Did the Clikit Ticket, with Escalation included. Nothing happened. I pinged them twice. Sent them pictures of the IMEI and serial number on the phone. I just can't find anyone there who knows how to do it, or is interested enough to find someone who knows how to do it. Pathetic. No wonder they are number 4.

Unfortunately they have weak internal communications and things fall through a lot.

Did you try community.sprint.com ?

The staff there are fairly methodical unlike elsewhere in Sprint.

If you open a thread there, they will get back to you privately usually and follow up.

Other than that, if you prefer you can contact
Marci Carris
SVP Customer Management at Sprint.
[email protected]

and complain / ask for help

I realize you may not want to spend more time on this but I think either of those should work.

Sprint Community reps were able to add an iPhone 6 to their database for me which was failing their check for no other reason than database issues (same phone showed clean on Sprint MNVO Tello). Very good support there...with just a couple messages back and forth they were able to resolve an issue their regular support couldn't after multiple chats and phone calls.

Good to hear.
Actually that symptom would be typical of a phone having been on an mvno at one time and so needing to have the ownership flag flipped from PLBL to SPCS to activate back on postpaid, but it is good to know that Sprint Community is prepared to do what needs to be done without having to rely on LiterallyUnlimited for such fixes all the time.

It was actually a Verizon phone that just didn't show up correctly in the Sprint database. Before I knew about the Sprint Community Forums I did have to rely on LiterallyUnlimited to flip a flag on an iPhone 6 (previously used on Tello) after both Sprint and Tello failed to resolve the issue. If I had know how effective the Community Forums were I would have gone there first...

Oh I see - very good!

Your case is actually quite similar to the original poster's then.

I myself have got problems fixed through the Community Forun, one of which was extremely obscure.

It should, but I hope they also show some indication of cracking down on Amazon for the questionable phones it is selling in some cases (certainly a minority of cases). Otherwise Lenovo bears some of the blamne if they are turning a blind eye to it.

It might be something like Amazon's supplier diverting foreign-market-targeted phones and flashing them to the U.S. ROM to lower its cost. This could also be some sort of gambit to avoid paying U.S. fees or taxes or something like that. Except Sprint is catching them because it checks IMEI's very closely and the IMEI's are not what they are supposed to be for the U.S.

Your phone supplied direct from Lenovo Motorola should be fine though when you get it.

(I realize that *most* Moto phones bought from Amazon do not have this problem).

I don't mind spending more time. I like the idea of wasting hundreds of Sprint's dollars on this $30 phone due to corporate negligence. I will try both but all the Sprint community threads I have seen on this device have ended in failure and frustration.
