Strange that they would lock an unlocked phone. But yes it was an Essential bought from Sprint on a different account and it was unlocked after 50 days. I've already asked them to unlock it but it could take 2 weeks and I was planning on putting the phone up for sale today. Oh well...
To all who are asking for the cheapest phones to work on this deal..
Do not forget that Best Buy has been having a special promo for unlocked phones that is still going on. There is a Simple Mobile special, a Cricket Special, and a AT&T special. All require that you buy a SIM and the respective prepaid card and you would get $50 off the unlocked phone. Seems like the best of these alternatives is to go with the Simple Mobile one where you buy a $1 Simple Mobile SIM card and a $40 prepaid card. Than buy either a Moto E4+ or an Orbic Wonder which are both on sale for $149.99. Once you added your phone to the cart and then added the SIM card and the $40 card, your phone (either the 16 GB E4+ or the Orbic Wonder) drops $50 to $99. Then sell your Simple Mobile refill card on eBay and you'll wind up with about a $100 phone.

Thank you Wuyil!

Is that from ebay, or I can buy at any store?

I bought the E4 unlocked from Best Buy for $129 [bestbuy.com]. You then can get the $40 cricket prepaid card and $10 cricket sim card and Best Buy will give you $50 off the order. [bestbuy.com]

I was able to sell my $40 Cricket Phone card for $40 and made $34.54 after all the PayPal/eBay fees. So the phone really cost me about $95 plus sales tax $7.90 so just over $100 for the phone delivered.

This was last week and the deal on that has not changed. Now they also have the Moto E4 Plus on sale for $159 [bestbuy.com] and you can get the same deal with the prepaid phone card. I myself probably would have went with this deal but I only really wanted it as a spare phone and a hotspot so I am okay with the smaller one, at least for now.

Don't forgot you need a sim card. The Boost Tri-Pack [bestbuy.com] works with the Moto E4 and this sprint deal. That is another $10.

Yeah they do. Of course you have to pay the eBay and PayPal fees. Go to eBay and search for the completed auctions and you will see.

I've tried this promotion in the past for not even a month and had to switch back to Verizon due to service issues in my area. I've heard they are taken care of now. Any way to do this again?

If your account under your SSN has been fully closed for 45 days you should qualify as a new customer eligible for a full year.

If it was left open to a more recent date you would probably get your old end date unless you have a different SSN (spouse etc.) you can use.

All free and clear Sprint branded postpaid phones are accepted (but if purchased under a Sprint-sponsored offer you need to look at the details of that closely). They are not listed explicitly because this is a list of BYOD non-Sprint phones.

Who would you buy it from and do they require a Sprint phone number and paid plan to buy it ?

Not true. I have a Samsung Note 5 Sprint is cleared of finance and out of Sprint account more than a year ago but it is not egilible for free BYOD when check with Sprint.

I am sure we will be able to get yours on if you want to work on it here. The most likely problem is not related to its being a Sprint model and would also have occured with a non-Sprint phone that had been on an Sprint MVNO earlier and left flagged as in MVNO status.

Was your phone on a Sprint MVNO at any time? If so, you will have to get it pushed back to Sprint postpaid (search on LiterallyUnlimited in this thread) and then it will go on fine.

In any case, does Ting say it is eligible and mention CDMA if you check the IMEI at https://ting.com/byod

Also, what does https://www.sprint.com/en/shop/br...print.html say if you enter the IMEI?

The amswers to these will give us important clues as to what went wrong and we can suggest what to do.
