I've been on this port for over 10 hours. Two lines are here, a 3rd is halfway here, two are still stranded on t-mobile. This is unbelievable. It isn't worth it!
Port problems are usually at the yielding carrier side.

All Sprint does is submit the account info you give it to the other carrier and that carrier says yea or nay.

Very often the subscriber gives incorrect info. This has to be corrected by info from the subscriber. Carriers cannot bypass or shortcut the check. Ownership of the number is at stake, so other carriers cannot give the "correct answers" to Sprint.

I have had TMobile and Verizon ports take days.

Every try to call the TMO Port Center? I had to go through three levels of interviews with totally ignorant staff before even getting to a knowledgeable rep, wasting many hours.

Sprint even has a nice port management user interface at https://shop2.sprint.com/en/wlnp/check.shtml
that allows you to correct ports online. (It gets enabled selectively so you may not get it). I have not seen that with other carriers.

All of that said, ports on any carrier are best done mid-week during working hours so that they have the best chance of being fixed when they go awry.

Sprint will call the other carrier to help resolve problems quickly but some VOIP and other providers will not take calls and insist everything be done only by automated electronic communication and some of them operate on a daily cycle only.

I actually agree though that quite often it really is not worth it to switch carriers much (regardless of the carriers involved) because it really can be a nightmare.

Thanks for the great info here. Was able to use the $5 Mint Starter kit from prime day deal to port in. Activation and port was quick but they added device protection plus plan for $13 without asking me so trying to remove from account.

You can also do it from your online account under change services. You can uncheck the 'Total Equipment Protection Plus' box. Don't worry if the check doesn't disappear immediately. It will by the next day.

Just signed up for another year of free service. Temporarily went to metro pcs for a month with their port 1 get 4 phones offer. the call took just over an hour for 3 lines. there were no identity type questions during the credit check, used new SSN. the rep did add the extended warranty but I didn't want to make a big fuss, just gonna cancel online. waited about 15-20 minutes for the port as part of the call. Only one worked initially then the second one worked a little later. The third one didn't work so called the porting department. had to perform the ## sequence to get the carrier settings to update and it worked. will port another two numbers in a couple days from the old free sprint account to my active metro pcs account then add to this new sprint account.

No because Sprint all but ignores the sim ICCID for acceptance purposes and validates the IMEI directly and rigidly from a narrow list of approved devices.

I had already transferred a Google Voice number to Sprint a few days ago to create my account. Here is how I transferred two other numbers from Virgin Mobile to the free Sprint plan.

1.) Messaged Virgin Mobile to get my account numbers.
2.) Bought a digital SIM one ebay for 3.25
3.) Created an account online at TMobile. I picked the $3 paygo plan and it cost $5 after tax. This showed me my account number for TMobile as soon as I purchased.
4.) Called Sprint and asked to add a line. Went through the process and reused by Virgin Mobile SIM. Number was ported while I was on the 30 min. phone call.
5.) Tried to reuse the Tmobile digital SIM but it said I couldn't on Tmobile website so I bought another digital sim.
6.) Followed same steps as above to transfer number.
Isn't Virgin Mobile a Sprint MVNO? Other information here indicates Print flags phones on Sprint MVNO's or pre-paid (PLBL) and that the flag needs to be changed to SPCS before being able to qualify for this deal and that the phone has to be inactive first.

Did you not have to have the flag on your phone changed to SPCS?

Timeline:

I will be updating this post to give you a timeline of my switch from Sprint ---> Tmo ---> Sprint

12:00pm: ported 4 lines
12:20pm: all lines confirmed ported

More to come. Hopefully I won't screw it up for others to have an idea of the whole process.
Thanks for all the post and advise

Virgin is not a Sprint MVNO. The MVNO/ownership flag is not relevant or applicable in any way to Virgin. PLBL stands for "Private Label" (not for "Prepaid"), meaning some non-Sprint non-Virgin non-Boost brand.

Virgin (like Boost) is a prepaid brand of Sprint itself and there are separate flags for it alone in the Device Management Database (DMD) that are maintained properly by Sprint/Virgin and are much more specific and detailed than the MVNO flag used for MVNO's.

Any issues with releasing or activating Virgin phones on Sprint postpaid can just be directed to Virgin customer service which is prepared to handle them fully.

Most Sprint MVNO's other than Ting and Google can't be bothered releasing/flipping the MVNO ownership flag so that a phone can be used on Sprint postpaid, but this is not a problem on Boost (provided you are eligible) or Virgin.

Sprint MVNO's, in comparison, are completely separately owned independent businesses that have agreements to use Sprint's network, such as Ting, Tello, Twigby, etc..

To those doing this via $3.25 T-Mobile digital SIM. I'm trying to port over from Textnow because apparently it is a Sprint reseller despite when signing up and checking my number it said I was eligible with that number.

When you guys called to port over, after giving them all your credentials to port and making a 6 digit pin did they tell you that you will get a text saying the port was successful? They said they would also need to send you another text containing a activation code once the port goes through to fully activate the account? How does it work exactly?

You don't get a physical SIM card and once they port over you won't have service for them to text you with, I believe Sprint requires the T-Mobile account to be "active" in order to port as well. This is confusing as hell...
Had the same experience with you porting with the T-Mobile digital sim. Rep said she'll text me etc. I panicked... Lol... And just used a spare real sim I had instead. Didn't want to complicate the port. This was a couple of months ago.

This 5 line signup was a nightmare. 12 hours all said and done including *#*# programming action this morning. The two factor authentication was a real show stopper as the botched port left two lines that were not present as the only method of two factor authentication (Sprint should rethink that). It's unfortunate, the last port I did from t-mobile prepaid with two lines was under an hour.

I will think twice about recommending this promo in the future.

Isn't a lot of the problem the attempted zero-cost porting methods rather than the offer itself?

Sprint never recommended those methods.

People on SlickDeals tend to focus on getting "slick" deals by trying to get everything for free - "just ask for a free sim from a Sprint store" etc. "Just port in and out of TMO without paying anything." "Get a free sim from Twigby using this trial code."

This is absolutely fine and commendable for those who need/want to minimize costs. SlickDeals has been a Godsend for me personally in terms of finding great deals.

But all of the above can give some degree of problems for those who are tighter on time than on dollars.

I myself do not want to get free sim cards from dealers, do not try to do TMO ports for free, etc. when a few dollars gives me a better experience and recourse if things go wrong. But others want to use the cheapest method possible. Either way is fine but I think you need to tailor the approach to your own situation. People tight on time may need to override some of the recommended approaches.
