If you add a new line today under your EXISTING plan, it will have the terms of your EXISTING plan. Therefore, it will end 7-31-18 which means don't do it. You'll need to port out, and port in accordingly using a different SSN or wait out the 45 day period (for Sprint to see you as a "new" customer)
Thanks for your reply. Are you basing this on your own personal experience, the wiki, etc.? Have any SD'ers actually done this to confirm? Are there any more detailed terms and conditions viewable online, or can be emailed or posted, which describe it? Also, I don't follow your logic of this being added to any type of family or shared plan. Each line has unlimited. And 3 Sprint reps told me that the end date would be 9/19 for the added line even after I repeatedly stressed that the original lines were ending 7/31/18. Are they just trying to get commission, sell Total Equipment Plus? Do they manually put in an end date?

Thanks. It is for 11yr old so not "mission critical" which is why I was potentially interested in taking a free year. My other option is Cricket which is where I personally use service. Im not a lover of Sprint in general. I am willing to jump thru a few hoops to save 280 bucks which is what I would pay for a year of Cricket. That said I don't want to be futzing around every few weeks on hold with Sprint reps trying to get sh⅞t restored again. I really would like to sign up once and live out the year and then reassess from there. Why does it require swapping in the phones again and again? Or are you just saying that if I pick a phone that is NOT on the list then I may have to do that?
Yes just if it is not on the list. And just once in that case.

So I am looking for a Sprint phone that didn't start life as a prepaid phone. But if the seller lists it as Unlocked then wouldn't it work even if it started as a MVNO phone?

We have been over this maybe a hundred times on this thread and it is always the original expiry date of the first line. Reps are CLUELESS and wrong on this numerous times. They simply do not care about anything except sales. Forget them. Or do it and you will see for yourself. It won't cost much.

PDANet will work fine for USB tethering on S8. I have one and use it all the time. The phone does not need to be rooted.

If you can get the hotspot at all it will be only 512 meg. at most for recent signups.

I apologize for a stupid question, but where do i get PDANet? When I search that on the Play store, none of the results are actually called "PDANet." There are a few that state they're compatible with PDANet, and there's one that is a "free guide to PDANet," but nothing that's just plain PDANet.

No, Sprint does not honor anyone else's concept of Unlocked except its own. It has records of whether a Sprint phone started as Prepaid or Postpaid.

I have found and used some Sprint phones from EBay that did start life as Postpaid. But they are needles in a haystack of mostly Boost phones.

Now, non-sprint-branded but eligible phones are ok too except you have to get the mvno flag flipped for them if it is on.

If I'm signing up for another a new account using a new SSN, can I use the email address on my current account or will that cause problems?

He may not understand that we have all added additional lines later and seen this personally,
Beyond that, many people just have a blind faith that Sprint TeleSales reps are the authorities! Ha ha ha to that notion! We have proved the reps wrong on this every single time that they claimed you get a new full year with a line that is added later.

I should say that if you want to overlap the two accounts in time though, I might use a different email address out of conservatism. I am not sure whether the people who posted did that or not. Maybe they will see this and clarify.

That is probably a good idea - I'll go that route.

Mine (old plan) says: 6.5926/10 GB

What does yours say?
I don't see hotspot anymore.
