Wow it's free. I signed up in April and went abroad for two months. Free data roaming was great. Nothing to complain about. One whole year of service for $4 a month is a steal.

I stay up to date on the thread and have searched but can't find these answers, so sorry to add to the massive thread count here. Daughter was on the plan for the past year using my SS. We want to take advantage of another year, but wife has a postpaid account on Sprint under her SS (we'll move her line over if we're successful getting the re-upped second year free plan). Since we don't have any more SS and have to be off one for 45 days before re-registering, I ported my daughter's number over to a Tmobile virtual SIM 3 weeks ago. She's not too old and can be without mobile service for 45 days (we ported out a couple months before the 9/18 end date to get it activated when school was back in and to hopefully beat a possible surprise end to the promotion). When porting to TMobile the CS agent wanted to set me up with an account but I told her I was waiting for the phone and would take care of it when that arrived. My questions are:

- How long will a number stay on the virtual SIM without it being used? Will the number remain active sitting there for 45 days? I started thinking about it this morning and thought maybe I'd better do the cheapest $3 pay as you go plan just to make sure we could keep the number, but when I tried to set up a TMobile account online it sent a text to the phone number to confirm the account (which I obviously can't see)

- Once the 45 days are up and we've ported back over my daughter's number from TMobile, I want to also port my wife's number to the plan but since she's currently on Sprint I'll need to port her number out first. Can I use the same virtual SIM that my daughter's number is currently on (but will be empty after we port her number in) or do I need to buy a new one?

Google says 90 days. But I wouldn't test that limit.

A search of the thread would tell you the answer is yes.

Some of the parts of this video are still accurate... I just called Sprint to try to get my phones unlocked so I can use them elsewhere, and of course I'm on the phone for an hour and they bust out both of those lines... "mmm...yeah, you know, we're performing some network upgrades in your area...but I mean, it looks like you've got great coverage" - same lies they've given me every time I reported my experience with their network. They even tried to entice me with an offer for a lower rate. My free year is up, and they failed their free trial. At this point, I'd only stick around if they paid me. If I had a dollar for every minute I spent trying to get data in the dead spots in town, tied up on the phone with customer service trying to switch phones (because you can't just put a SIM card in), or ignoring/declining/mashing keypad on all the spam calls I started getting as soon as I switched from T-mobile...

At the same time, I feel bad for them. I can't imagine how this promotion was supposed to work. If you want to be able to afford to upgrade your network, you need paying customers. But which comes first, the chicken or the egg? I don't envy the position they're in, bleeding money, inferior technology, about to get gobbled up by T-mobile...what can ya do with that?

What was the actual problem you encountered with unlocking? To unlock phones you call Account Services at 1-888-211-4727. They will unlock a phone after 50 days on the service if it can be unlocked. That is more generous than some other carriers. There should be no ifs ands or buts about it. That is their published policy. I have had no problems unlocking phones.

not true. If you have a phone that you bought on eBay, almost every sprint phone is financed and won't pass Financial Eligibility, they won't unlock it.

I think it was mainly about just not wanting me to leave. He sounded like he was under pressure.

Kept being suspicious and verbose about the different phones that I had switched back and forth to on my account even though I only wanted 2 unlocked--the SE I'm using now, and a 7 plus I tried before. It was almost comical [youtu.be]. "let's see here...umm...uhh...yeah, I see the iPhone SE and we can definitely submit a request to get that one unlocked...looks like you had an iPhone 6 silver 128, iPhone 6s grey 128...an iPhone X briefly, but I'm not seeing this one 7 plus, can you give me the IMEI number again by any chance..."

Then listing all the reasons that an unlock request can get denied, "y'know, if there's any installment agreements outstanding, or account's not in good standing, or canceled".

I kept having to say "yeah the phones aren't financed, everything should be in the clear" and he kept feigning trouble looking up the account history.

Eventually managed to submit the requests after all the back and forth, and apparently I'll hear back in a couple days. success.jpg

Well that's an obvious exception common to other carriers that would occur to anyone and there are others along those lines, sure. I am not about to restate the entire policy.

But will they even let it on if it is not paid off? If not, how would you satisfy the 50 days anyway?

The phone is forever attached to the original owner and will be blacklisted if the account goes negative. Even when the original owner pays off the phone, Sprint will ask you to provide the name and phone number of the original owner if you want to unlock it.

I have bought over 20+ Sprint phones on eBay, almost every single one is financed except some iPhones that people bought from Apple and paid full price. You can use the financed phone but you just can't unlock it.

Satisfying 50 days only works for the original owner when you pay off the phone.

I am glad to hear it should hopefully turn out ok. I think he was calculating to see to see if the 50 day rule was satisfied.

Account Services is primarily in charge of Customer Retention and secondarily in charge of unlocks, so yes, you are absolutely right that he was focused on Retention. They view unlocks as the first step toward leaving and therefore an opportunity for them to convince you otherwise. So yes, you are absolutely correct and their mandate is to keep you as a customer and that is why he is required to try to do that. They have special retention offers etc. I agree it is irritating if you know you are leaving anyway. I find it best just to cut that off and not discuss it. .

Oh I see your point.
But don't you qualify again for unlock after your own 50 days on the service? I thought that was the case.

Yeah. I figured as much. Fortunately, I have enough patience to sit through that kinda stuff and not get worked up. Just doing his job. I feel bad for the guy, because even though it's not his fault, he's still probably going to be penalized for not keeping me.

So there's no way of using your SSN if you already had this promo? I don't really want to use someone else's data because I will also have to create the account with theirs. I was thinking about using my daughter SSN but probably won't work either because she's a minor

Once you are 45 days completely off Sprint, you are allowed back on as a new customer that qualifies again, using the same SSN.

Or, you can come back right away with no delay if you can get a family member to open the new account under their SSN and port into that.
