same issue for me, then had a terrible experience calling their number.. they kept telling me that promo doesnt exist and its $50 a month. told them im not interested and would not stop trying to sell and kept calling me by the wrong name too -_- now they have left about 4 voicemails within the last 30 min
That means you called the wrong number. (I realize some messages may list other numbers).

Call only 866-782-8777. I guarantee they know all about the Free Plan.

Other departments do not have access to this promo. (Sprint does not want the free plan leaking over to leach customers from their full-pay clientele or prospects).

You can cancel it the next day if you want and have zero charges.
After 15 days you might be looking at paying one month (about $5) in taxes, that's all.

So I tried to sign up online but right after I gave them my SSN they say I need to call?

Anyone else have this happen or should I just give up?

I tried using a IMEI generator with a Freedompop phone number. I don't want them to run my credit twice...
It happens quite frequently and is usually just for quite innocuous reasons. I would just call 866-782-8777. I doubt they have run your credit yet but you can check that if you want.

As you will see from other posters and the wiki, most of us recommend that people should call in to activate in the first place and not use the online activation, for multiple reasons.

I doubt it is related to the IMEI but do check it in the checker if not already done.

I don't think Verizon has any prepaid plan that you can just activate without paying for a plan for a month. If your phone is Sprint compatible and you get a compatible Sprint sim for that phone, you're better off getting a prepaid sim for T-Mobile. You can activate and get a number for free on their pay-as-you-go plan, but don't have to immediately put money on the plan. I did this for one of our iPhones for the Sprint free plan. I activated the sim and got a number from T-Mobile without adding any funds to the pay-as-you-go plan (You have to tell them you don't have your device in-hand yet). Once that was set, I ported the number to Sprint with my Sprint compatible iPhone and Sprint compatible sim. It was pretty easy.
Thanks for your response. I purchased Verizon prepaid kit, because sprint byod page says, Bring your Verizon or AT&T phone. Does it still work with T-Mobile number? Thanks.

I believe it would be cheaper to use tmobile or GV to port in. Details in the wiki. You can port in from ANY non-sprint or sprint mvno carrier.

Sigh!

People are posting completely bogus info in the Wiki based on guesses on their part and no personal experience: "WARNING: ACCORDING TO TERMS IT SEEMS IT SHOULD BE ONLY DONE ONLINE AND NOT OVER THE PHONE:"

The Sprint page specifically says at the top:

"Call to order 1-866-782-8777"

I would really appreciate some help with this. I would like to know 1. How do you know if your phone is unlocked? I have a Sprint iPhone 6 that was purchased second-hand. I have no idea if it's unlocked or if it needs to be. That being said, it's currently activated with Twigby (A sprint MVNO), and the customer service rep online with sprint told me the phone wasn't eligible due to that. What would be my best option for changing companies so that I could be eligible? I'm not sure if the T-Mobile digital sim thing would work for me or if I would need to go another company not associated with sprint. Also, I would like to know if the sim card I am using currently with Twigby (which is a sprint sim card) will work with this? Repps for anyone's assistance please as I'm trying to save my student little brother some money.

It does not need to be unlocked since it is a Sprint phone (unless it is locked to Boost).

After you get it off Twigby, check the IMEI on several checkers. It will probably say "you owe money to Sprint" This means you will need to push it back to PostPaid (search this thread on LiterallyUnlimited).

Then it may take a few tries to get it on. This will be quite a bit of work and back and forth but will work in the end unless it has Boost or other prepaid locks on it.

Sprint will not help with any of this.

If it is too much work, you can look for another route.

It is the *number* that has to be ported in from TMO etc, not the phone. The phone has to be off the Sprint network but that is sufficient.

You can and should use the same sim.
