From my experience, they won't activate the free service on a phone that came from Sprint. To get the free deal, the phone you bring needs to be on the list and can't have come from Sprint originally. But, also from my experience, you can swap in a Sprint phone later, so what you describe would be possible. You could borrow a friend's Verizon iPhone (you would need a new Sprint sim kit), activate using that, then swap to your Sprint 5s.
WawaWhat!!! ........Here's your answer:
Quote from comintel :
That is completely false.
Any unencumbered Sprint postpaid phone will work, but if they have been used on an mvno, they will be rejected until the ownership flag is first reset to SPCS.
(Phones originally sold for Sprint prepaid divisions cannot be activated at all unless they were used for a year there).

Lets hope it is extended beyond 09/13 but if not, good luck to everyone that got it. I don't have unlocked phone and it doesn't make sense for me to buy CDMA phones now when so many phone will be announced in September and October.

Just signed up. These are the steps I took.
1. Bought a new unlocked Essential PH-1 for 225 locally
2. Tried to pick up a boost BYOD sim card kit from Best buy but they were out. They sold me a Sprint sim for 2.75. they even looked up what the correct sim would be for my phone.
3. Payed 3 dollars to Port my Google Voice number. The account number will be your Google voice number and your PIN is the PIN number used to access your mailbox.
4.Called the promotion phone number to set up service. First thing they asked was what service provider I was switching from. I told them Google Voice. Surprisingly that wasn't a problem at all. They started by by gathering all my info for the credit check. Then they asked for the imei and the number on the sim card. Then they explained that the line was 5 dollars and I would get a 5 dollar credit for enrolling in autopay, which I did. They told me to turn my phone on in about 30 mins and I should be ready to go.
5. This is where I ran into a hiccup. They phone would not activate and I could not sign up for a MySprint account. The phone number would come back as inactive or cancelled. I did some research and found out that it would take a few days to Port the GV number over. I called Sprint's porting department and told them what was going on. They looked up the account and saw that GV had approved the Port and she manually entered the Port inthe system. A few minutes later the phone activated.
6. I created a MySprint account and verified that I was enrolled in the correct free year plan. And done.

The whole thing was very easy to set up, the sales rep seemed pretty knowledgeable and willing to explain things to me. Even though I asked not to be enrolled in the device protection plan, I was. That's something to watch out for. Anyone know how I can get it removed?
Note 8 in the wiki.

Must be a Verizon, AT&T or T-Mobile customer bringing new lines to Sprint.
You must own the phone(s) you're bringing to Sprint.

link for the lazy [sprint.com]

apparently any non sprint number will work
check the checker just to be sure
I just switched to this plan from Mint, no issues.

Dang, I really wanted to say read the wiki. It is a common Q. The answer resides at the bottom of the promo page:

Add a Line: Add a line at any time with port-in from postpaid carrier and Bring Your Own Eligible Phone up to the max. number of lines & get promotional pricing until 9/30/19.

In other words, all lines will have the end date of the first line ported in.

Read the wiki to find out how to get another year. There, i said it.

You need to port out to a non-Sprint carrier and then port back in on a new Sprint account using a different SS number. All details are in the wiki.

You're not eligible because Fi is considered a Sprint mvno.
You will have to
(1) Get the phone off Fi
(2) Ask Fi to flip the mvno flag so that the phone is eligible for use on Sprint postpaid.

That error means something different from how it reads.

What it means is, the phone was on a Sprint mvno at some earlier time and was left set for MVNO use only on the Sprint network until it is pushed back to Postpaid.

If it was ever on Fi or Ting, either of those companies can flip the flag for you, even now.

Otherwise, search this thread for "LiterallyUnlimited" and read how he can flip the flag for you at no cost as
a community goodwill gesture from his office at Sprint MVNO Ting.
