After 20 years on here I've never seen a deal with so many caveats! I lost interest after page 30.

What does sprint gain from this?

Can you get it without a approved phone on the list? I wouldn't mind a having this as a second sim in my dual sim Lumia 950xl

That phone is GSM only and has none of Sprint's data or voice bands and could never work on Sprint.

It's not nearly as complicated as it appears:
Sprint is promoting their service by offering free service for one year. They simply require that you bring your line from a competitor, and your own phone. The reason it makes sense for them is that there are no costs to do so.
No Marketing cost.
No subsidized handset cost.
Yes, some aspects of the CDMA service are quirky but by no means insurmountable.
A good deal of this thread is dedicated to specific phone issues and porting issues.
90% of new sign ups are straight forward and simple.
Read the wiki.
Get a compatible phone.
Call the dedicated number.
Save thousands.
Thanks for the one hundredth time to the exhaustive hand holding offered here by a handful of helpful posters.
My take is that this is the best Slickdeals thread ever.
Happy Motoring.

CDMA Sprint whitelisted phones only. So No.
What they have to gain are revenue generating Customers after the free year.
Many of us have found the service to be excellent and will stay after the BYOD expires.

Could I say I am bringing an eligible phone and then put the sim in my Lumia 950xl to use?

You probably need your phones flag flipped. Project fi uses sprints prepaid database. It wont activate on sprint post paid unless flipped back. Sprint should be able to file a ticket to fix this.
Simple way for Project Fi users is to Port out to Google voice (there is a cancellation option to do this or customer care can also help you). After porting is complete (typical timeline is 24 hours), call/chat with Fi customer service and have your IMEI removed from Sprint database. This would be done while you call/chat with them. Now your number is eligible to Port in to Sprint.
You woul need to unlock the number on Google voice site, otherwise the Sprint porting fails.
Keep the Sprint SIM card ready and give a call to the specific number (in the community wiki) for this offer, you will be good. Sprint will try to refresh your network configuration, which would complete in about 3-4 hours, it maybe faster too.

Note:
1. In this process, you would kinda lose mobile network for part of the day.
2. You wouldn't be charged to Port out from Google voice (only if you come from Project Fi; otherwise there is $3 fee to Port out from GV).

Nope. The phone itself is incompatible.
Furthermore in future you cannot Sim swap on Sprint. Takes a chat or a call in to register the imei and the correct Sim card. Those vary. Good Luck

Spoke with Sprint retentions but all they are offering is a laughable $10 off of regular bill of $60 but wont extend the free 1 year even if I upgrade. I saw someone else mentioning he was able to get an extension but not sure if Sprint offered him from their side or he asked for it and Sprint agreed.

Always this. What's the point of free if it doesn't work? I'd rather pay Verizon a $100 a month than port my number and use my phone as a paperweight.
Sprint does work for millions of people. For the people it does work for you don't have a point.

viral marketing is just as likely to be negative, ergo, someone touting Verizon over Sprint in a pointless comment in a thread about Sprint.
