Thank you for the help, I had bought it from Sams last year and picked up ATT as carrier during last years offer .. checked the model number and it is 1863 which makes it CDMA compatible .. so I guess no reason not to take advantage of this offers by paying up the remaining cost for all the phones ?
I am 99% sure that you should be good. Just to make sure, can you check the part numbers in settings>general ? Part number will tell if it's a Verizon, Sprint, or Sim Free iPhone. I bought an iPhone 6S sim free version from Apple store a few years ago and it can be used on either CDMA or GSM network. I used it on this deal for a year prior. I like my freedom to choose carrier that's why I always get a phone that will work on either system. I recently got a 2nd hand iPhone X Verizon version which also works on any carrier and also put it and my old 6S on this deal. One thing though, you will need to ask AT&T to unlock your phone if they locked it.

So then we thought this is the year of "Sprint" !

Give them a chance, and in the process we could save about $1400 for our cellphone bill over AT&T.

So we gave them a chance - got two lines.

AT&T Sim is out - Sprint is IN.

Told the wifey to also try - just give them a chance would you !

After a week of fully trying, I'm crying. This SPRINT quality will leave you in the dust just when you need it the most!

Also cannot talk and surf at the same time - had an issue while at the airport - the agent wanted some information from the account, but data would not work while the phone call was on.

Google Maps stopped working mid way

So many occasions when the phone internet just didnt work when we needed it the most !

OMG - I really feel bad for Sprint, I wish them well, but in three more days I will be disconnecting the two lines and going back to AT&T.

Also note, note, Just got my phone bill, and noticed the charge for "Sprint Complete - protection for smartphone - Includes insurance" for $15 each line, and realized that the OP talks about this charge, but do not remember the sales person talking about it at all, so had to call in specially to get it removed. The customer service person said, we have good news and bad news, the bad news is "you will have to pay this for now", "and we will take it off for the future"...this gets me fuming ! but finally they agreed to take it off...

...and that was my attempt at switching over from AT&T after 11 years (from 2007 iPhone launch)
Agreed, ported into Sprint 3 weeks ago. Day 1, I noticed CallingPlus (VoLTE) somewhat works in my area. Due to Sprint having a horrible signal, callers often cannot hear me or I cannot hear them. Eventually I turn off VoLTE. Problems continue, frequent dropped calls, or failed to connect errors. Also getting LTE data connection lost. Day 4, business trip to Hong Kong. Sprint easily has the best international roaming rates I've seen. Free texting and free 2g data. I opted for the week pass for high speed data, service works pretty good in HK. 10 days later, return to USA. At LAX airport, I can't even hail an UBER. Data connection is so slow, despite it saying LTE. Takes me 7 minutes of a spinning circle before I'm finally matched with an Uber driver. I ported back into Verizon the next day. I had Sprint 5 years ago and I honestly think the service is worse now than it was then.

Is there any documentation anywhere to support that so I can take it up with Sprint? My first line didn't have the activation but when I added a second line it shows $30 billable activation charge.

It's on their website:
"Hassle-free relief starts here
Save over $800 in the first year. Switch over your whole family and save even more!
Get Unlimited data, talk & text free for 1 year
Keep your phone and phone number
No annual contracts, no activation fees - a $30 savings!"

Did you activate the second line online? I heard if you do it online, the charge will show but I don't remember if they will automatically credit it back to your account or you will have to contact them for that. There might be info about this in wiki. I just always activate my lines via phone and never got $30 charge.

Yes, if you go to settings>general>about, and find a model number. It will look something like "MQxxxLL/A".
For example, MQ6K2LL/A is iPhone 8, 64 GB space gray, MQ752LL/A is 64 GB space gray sprint.

That's a 64 GB Silver sim-free version. You are good to go on sprint once AT&T unlock it.

My wife and I are on the BYOD plan at the moment, but she's dropped her iPhone 6s and has damaged it. I'm planning to buy her a unlocked iPhone 8 from Apple, but what does this Verizon-Only mean? Would an unlocked phone from the Apple Store not work?

Ignore the first posts and see the link in the wiki for eligible phones. Sim free iPhone will be fine to swap in.

Pretty much. I tried activation online and got stuck on ordering sim card so I called in. You generally should get it done in 30 mins or less on the phone.
