Guess they are finally valuing their service quality at zero dollars!! Having unfortunate experience of being a sprint customer, I wholeheartedly concur with the valuation of their service.

Hi! I have ten specific questions that only pertain to my individual circumstances. I epitomize laziness and my sense of entitlement is impervious to reason. Therefore it is the responsibility of anyone and everyone who reads this to find the answers to my questions.

I am sorry this is so complicated and I am sure it must be frustrating to you..

You need the sim kit first before you can sign up.

It is just a part. Buy it for cash and take it home unopened. You do not need any of their store services to hook it up and should not use them. They are likely to mess up your account. It has happened to to many people.

I suspect you may have not read the full Wiki.

Maybe it is easier to just call the number and order the kit to be shipped.

I realize they are just trying to be helpful but it is too risky in my opinion to let them. Too many people have ended up on the wrong plan if they let the store touch it. Then it takes ages to try to fix it up after the fact.

Both staff and customers have a commendable expectation and instinct to involve store staff in the process but this unique offer cannot work that way. Store staff cannot be involved because there is no revenue to pay the normal commission / store fees that they are counting on charging against the account.
for some cases maybe yes go to the store to buy a sim kit, but for most, i would rather walk into a best buy store, spend $5 to $10 for a sim, preserve my dignity, as well as my sanity....and walk out with my chin up.

Yes, but we also have to give people things to remember if buying at Best Buy
- the Boost kit does not cover the newest phones
- so for those newest phones, they have to deal with individual sim part numbers

So we have to get into all the details of the exact sim they need and whether or not it is in the Boost kit. And Best Buy may not have all sims. And they charge varying prices.

With the Sprint 4 in 1 kit purchased at a Sprint corporate store, they can just get one single kit for everything and it is cheaper too, only $2.99 (and sometimes free).

As you say, it is a trade-off.......

I agree.

And then for more fun the customer who is given the wrong plan spends a month trying to correct it going through various appeals within Sprint when all they would have had to do is cancel the plan (by porting out) and start over.

So not only do they blow signing up for the plan, they also blow getting out of the wrong plan that they ended up with because they signed up wrong.

I am sure Sprint knows now about all the grief it has caused with the self-service aspect of this plan and has had second thoughts, probably regarding it as a failed experiment and given up on doing it this exact way in the future.

Notice they killed off $15 self-service KickStart and replaced it with $25 KickStart with Store support. The extra $10 pays for the store support..

I have a feeling they thought this Free plan would die off without any further promotion. This thread and one or two other forums may be the main source of new customers asking for this plan. Remember when this thread went to "dead deal" status until we asked SlickDeals to reinstate it? I have a feeling Sprint had a hand in that. But as long as it keeps generating business with no publicity costs, they have not killed it so far.

Yes, can't believe but Google Fi who used to have a reputable customer service is almost like Sprint right now with the way they take care of their customers. Lots of people having problems with Google honoring their promos and people being eligible and some Pixel hardware problems.

Wouln't it be a lot easier just to sign up the new person to a new plan?

Then port the phones and numbers out to a temporary carrier (eg. TMobile Prepaid - see Wiki for how) and port into the new plan.

Plus that way you would get a free longer period in many cases.

I believe it doesn't work with Sprint

It works with Sprint. Mine just upgraded to Android 9 Pie. I ordered the two Android One versions from the Amazon promotion as family spares. Two lines of device protection at $18 ($9 each) plus deductible 2x , it will not take long for the $280 investment to break even, plus the phones , new, will hold some value.

I would look at used sprint phones such as these Sprint branded LG models: G6-V20-G5-G4, most of which can be found under $100 or...

Used Samsung S8 or S9 from any carrier which have brand switching- meaning it will work on all carriers once unlocked from the original carrier. Price range is $200 and up. If you can afford it, these are your best bet.

It really all depends on what you can afford. And don't forget to read the wiki in it's entirety for further understanding of this promo.

Store staff cannot be involved for this offer because there is no revenue to pay the normal commission / store fees that they are counting on charging against the account. So the store has incentive to put you on a different plan.
Ah got it. I read the wiki, but it didn't mention anything in relation to what I tried. I'll go back today as the guy helping me isn't there and try to pick the sim card he left for me without them trying to tie to an existing account. I'm not sure if that SIM is already screwed up now as he was making sure to have the right number (SIM) he was scanning in to the system and asked me to enter my SS and got my phone information. I'll go back today and say I called up Sprint and was told to just buy the SIM card at the store and to activate over the phone vs. having a store do it. If that doesn't fly, I'll just call and order.

The wiki implies you don't need a SIM card when you sign up - but I assume when you sign up via phone they tie the SIM card they are sending you to your account. My assumption was that if I had an account created over the phone I could then go to the store with the account number and information and purchase the SIM and then activate it myself. He asked me about the plan I signed up for and I told him it was the free year account and he essentially said... cool got it. Now I'm assuming this is tied into what you guys are talking about above about the store wanting to activate the account for some sort of commission/other money whereby people have been screwed over and gone through a bit to have it changed back.

Well that's good that you are patient.

He may be cool with it, but from what we have seen in the past they get a surprise if they try to access the free plan offer and find they cannot do so using their standard tools without first dealing with it as a paid plan.

Some have said "well we can just make it a paid plan temporarily and then you can convert it back to the free plan by calling in later." Then the person gets home and finds that is impossible and it takes weeks to sort out the mess.

It is not needed for him to help in any way and that is not the intention for this plan, so it just looks like risk exposure to me.

It is actually ok if he created an empty account with your SSN as long as he did not put a plan in it. Setting up an an empty approved account shell at a store is normal and is used where there are identity proof issues. If that has been done, it would be handy to know the account number he set up and give it to the rep when you call in later. Or they can probably find it.

Sims are not tied to accounts until a phone is activated.

Awesome, thanks for the information. It should help me in talking to them to just try to get the SIM card and get out - it's good to know more than who you're working with. If I can't convince em, will just need to pay a bit more with phone option.

Note 0:
-There is no contract. If u dont like service, you can port out anytime.
-You must have your own eligible phone, the specific sim card for that phone, a number to port in from a non sprint "family of providers"[basically a sprint competitor]

Good - I also added a few more comments with more detail just now.

If he has already set up an empty account with your SSN, that is ok, and you will need to use it when phoning in later. There can only be one account per SSN in the system.
