Guess they are finally valuing their service quality at zero dollars!! Having unfortunate experience of being a sprint customer, I wholeheartedly concur with the valuation of their service.

Hi! I have ten specific questions that only pertain to my individual circumstances. I epitomize laziness and my sense of entitlement is impervious to reason. Therefore it is the responsibility of anyone and everyone who reads this to find the answers to my questions.

It's not well written or clear and I don't see anything about people who closed their account. Only for porting out and in
porting out is just a way of closing an account so the same things in the wiki would apply. Porting out is preferred because it terminates the line pretty much immediately while closing an account in other ways can take time.

the wiki is long because it addresses lots of questions. Someone has taken a lot of time to try and help people.

My first free year ended around jan 20. I told them to cancel instead of porting out. Can i reuse that phone in my name, preferably or my spouse (not preferred) or do i need to port it somewhere first

Can i bring it in for a new number instead of porting?
I just want it for data in the car. Dont care about the number

Do i open a new account, assuming i can use my name after 45 days, or reactivate the old account?
addressing the part in bold..

you don't port a phone, you port a phone number. So to sign up again you need a phone number from somewhere that Sprint accepts as valid to port in.

That phone number doesn't have to be on the phone you're going to use with Sprint. It doesn't need to be on any phone.

I was successfully swapped my S9 to S10. However, I learned that my S9 is under locked status even though this is BYOD and i bought it unlocked at Samsung.com. I asked them to check other devices on the same account and they are all under locked status. I'd appreciate if someone can help me to understand how Sprint lock/unlock works?

Done. Called them yesterday evening and the rep found that I was with Sprint before on the plan. Then took my passcode I used before and activated the account. SIM got shipped today overnight and will be on sprint by tomorrow.
Thanks again for your and all other folks contribution here.
It may not be ideal if they reactivated the old account if it has the same SSN as you want to use again but I think it will still be ok. I suspect the rep was not thinking ahead. For most other plans, reactivating the old account would be the best approach.

They may have to deactivate it again but they should be up for that. Or maybe they will handle it another way.
(That may be an example of why it is better to obtain the sim separately as was my original suggestion - but I know you had problems doing so. Still should be ok though).

Does the model number end in U or U1?

You may have to add it back on temporarily to get it unlocked so that they can access it to unlock it. I think they will be able to unlock it right away assuming it was on for 50 days or more before.

It is best to get devices unlocked explicitly before taking them off.

You can work it out with Account Services. Do not waste your time talking to Support about it as Talk is all they can do. Only Account Services can actually fix the problem.

The same sim can and should be used. It is in the Wiki but we might as well be explicit here since people have looked at it.

Thanks.
The model ends with U1.
I requested the phone to be unlocked and they put in a request for old device and all current lines. I should receive email notification once it's done.

Why Sprint can lock the factory unlocked device that I don't understand.Mad

The S9 will be sent in for trade in. Does Samsung care if it was locked by Sprint?

Oh it was U1. That would indeed be a mistake to have locked it then. Mistakes happen unfortunately.

I have never seen that mentioned as being a concern re trade-ins. I am fairly sure Samsung would reset that. Personally I would not worry about it. I am sure they get lots of locked phoned back and handle it routinely. It does not say the phone has to be unlocked as far as I know.

Thanks. But my factory unlocked S10 (model does end with U1) just swapped today is also under locked status. W T H? Possibly, Sprint automatically locks your device once it's activated on their network and an unlock request must be made.

As noted by iwheela, the answer is no. But, an update is expected soon from Samsung. For now, the only Note 9 that works on more than one carrier is the factory unlocked version.

The current Wiki does not say that Note 9 unqualified works. (Please do not look at the old lists archived from the past which are totally wrong - I think one did say Note 9 at one point and never was corrected, you are right to that extent - it is really sad to have old lists posted right up front that are continually misleading people). The only current list, linked to in the Wiki, says for Samsung.

Galaxy Note 8
Galaxy Note 8 Special Edition
Galaxy Note 9 Special Edition (SPH-N960U1)
Galaxy S7 Edge Special Edition
Galaxy S7 Special Edition
Galaxy S8
Galaxy S8 Special Edition
Galaxy S8+ Special Edition
Galaxy S8+
Galaxy S9
Galaxy S9 Special Edition
Galaxy S9+
Galaxy S9+ Special Edition

Note all Note 8 are eligible, but so far only Note 9 Special Edition (which is the Factory Unlocked Version - ot even gives the model number ending on U1 to be clear). Of course the Sprint model works too.

This is a Samsung restriction affecting all carriers.
I noticed I was finally able to upgrade to Pie the other day on my Samsung unlocked Note 9. One of the last phones to receive it I believe. Is getting this update a good sign they may allow the unlocked Note 9 to roam on Tmobile when using Sprint? That's my issue. My Samsung unlocked works fine on Sprint, but no Tmobile roaming. Was hoping getting Pie was maybe a sign of things to come.

Crazy the Verizon update is taking so long as well.

Sorry to hear that but you can unlock it (easiest after 50 days). Could be a Samsung bug by the way too as they provide the device database entries for Samsung phones to Sprint.

They do not lock everything - a zillion people here have moved phones on and off without their getting locked. It affects only a tiny minority for whatever reason. Probably dumb / broken code.

I just moved my Sprint S8+ back onto Sprint today for the third year. t shows correct as unlocked for any sim. I did have to unlock it the very first time after 50 days and that has stuck. I believe yours will too once you unlock it the first time.

Agreed.

Other people also have reported no roaming whatsoever on the factory-unlocked model.

Many say it will come, along with VoLTE, but we will have to see. Worst case you can probably flash it if it does not occur inside a reasonable time although I am not 100% sure that would work.

Thank you. Is there any advantage to waiting until April 1 to do the switch over even though that would be kind of tight? I don't remember if the 12 months free includes whatever partial month you get on the first month or you get 12 full months for free no matter what.
No matter when you sign up, under current promotion the end date is 4/30/2020. If you have lines ready to port do it as early as possible.

Fair warning, The rep added the Total Equipment Protection plan without even telling me on the phone. I was forced to use online chat to remedy and they refused to waive the first month's fee.
