Yes, the merger is a go but realistically it wont be effective for several more months.
Another federal judge and the California Public Utilities Commission must approve the transaction.
Given the California Commies record, throwing a monkey wrench in there should not surprise anyone. That alone can delay this merger for another year. Hopefully they'll come to their senses and expedite it.
Also, the NY and CA attorneys general will hopefully come to their senses and not appeal the Court's decision.

I will check with rep about the contract. This contract is only for phone right? While transferring line to personal, Rep told me there is no contract on line. I should be able to port out line to different carrier. But phone will be still locked to ATT.
You were probably on a 2 year SERVICE contract to get the price of iphone XR discounted. This should have an ETF if you leave before 2 years. Not sure if the employer would be required to pay ETF before transferring line to your personal account or not.
I think current ETF is $325- $10/month of service completed. So about $235 in your case. I don't think ATT prepaid plans can be used to satisfy this agreement, so you most likely would have to pay the ETF or stay on ATT postpaid if ETF was not paid by employer.

Instead of relying on an ATT rep to check if you have a service agreement, I would check your myatt account to see if you have a contract end date.
Go to your account overview. If you're prompted for a security passcode and you don't know it, learn how to reset your security passcode.
Open My wireless section.
Scroll to Manage device & add-ons and choose the device you want to manage.
Select Manage my device.
On desktop and tablet your service commitment end date will display on the right.

Most carriers stopped 2 year service contracts years ago to get subsidized devices. Now they have you put the Phone on an device payment/installment plan split over 24(30 months for ATT next)months to pay off phone. To get a discount you receive bill credits every month to reduce amount owned on phone. These device payment plans do not have ETF or a service contract but if you leave early you lose the bill credits on the remaining months of the payment plan and remaining price of phone is due.
In terms of unlocking phone the service agreement would need to be completed or ETF paid off to satisfy service contract agreement. Also the device needs to have been active on ATT for 60 days. It was on the business account for more than 60 days so hopefully you would not need an additional 60 days on your personal acccount to unlock.

Judge today was talking up increased competition rather than less with approved merger. Makes no sense to me.
Tello, TextNow and other MVNO's will be out.
I wonder what effect, if any to our BYOD retention offers

Oh that is disappointing but interesting to hear!

I agree that there are multiple mentions on Sprint forums of final periods being pro-rated in other contexts. However, pro-rating does not appear to be applied to the free plan in particular in the circumstance of holding on through a billing period that crosses the supposed free period end-date, at least from the limited number of posts here. Instead, it appears these people are simply charged nothing.

Once the plan transitions to fully paid mode, perhaps you could get them to pro-rate if you specifically requested it and convinced them to do an immediate cancel instead of waiting for the normal end of period effective date of a cancellation. (In fact in that case I would try for a 100% 30-day satisfaction guarantee refund).

But pro-rating (or indeed any charging) does not appear to happen in the case that people here are normally asking about here of crossover from free status in the middle of the billing period.
My free plan end date was Jan 31st. My Jan billing end date was 5th Feb. I transferred one line after Jan 31st but before 5th Feb and there is no charge for that line in the upcoming Feb bill.
I had transferred my last line after Feb 5th. This is showing charges for the full month in Feb bill. Autopay is set by the end of this month. I know this bill was generated before I transferred this line. So my question is, will they pro-rate it as I had not used the whole month? And if yes, will they do it automatically before they charge my credit card or shall I have to call them to fix it?

Thanks for detailed information. I am not seeing any contract date in manage my devices page. It is displaying my device name with upgrade ready label. There is also link to see upgrade options.

Thanks for the valuable report.

It is said that there is normally no prorating at the end of service. So I would not count on pro-rating except possibly by discretionary adjustment. So I would suggest call Account Services at 844-382-3317 right away (I would suggest do not call another number) and tell them it was an accident that you went over etc etc and see if they will adjust it for you.

You can also tell them that you want to invoke the Sprint 30-day satisfaction refund guarantee on the new paid plan that went into effect with respect to their pro-rating policy . I cannot guarantee that this will work but it seems it should.

Win or lose with Account Services, you need to make sure that your request gets typed into your account notes as early as possible so that if you need to escalate later on, you can prove that you asked on time. If you let it go beyond 30 days you will be outside the 30-day satisfaction period. So whatever happens when you call, call back again a couple of days later to confirm that it has been approved. Do not let them keep stalling. Or Chat can read the notes for you. (But I would not chat to begin with as you have to talk to Account Services directly to get meaningful Sprint commitments - other departments just play around at the edge of issues and are unreliable).

That's what people have been experiencing but several reps have stated otherwise and there could be some risk of Sprint changing their interpretation or at some point "correcting an error" in its accounting practice whenever you rely on practice that can be argued to be at variance with the wording of the plan.

Also we do not have enough examples of people who let it run right up close to the end of the billing cycle.

DEAL IS OVER 4/30/2020
iF billing date is 4/27 - would months of 4/27-5/26 be free since billing date was before 4/30?
any experts out here?

Apparently yes according to what people have been experiencing in practice but Sprint will probably not confirm this practice (you can try).

Also the whole free plan is supposed to closed out on 4/30 for everyone so it is conceivable Sprint might take a different approach.

Most likely the pattern will hold but are probabilities enough? Personally I would not take the risk.

Also we do not have enough examples of people who let it run right up close to the end of the billing cycle.

The way it was explained to me a year ago, when you subscribe to the free plan you're billed the month in advance.

There seem to be TWO important dates with Sprint, the billing PERIOD and the bill PAYMENT date.
So, as an example, if your billing PERIOD is 3/25-4/24 your PAYMENT date for that period would be on 3/17.
So you are paid until 4/24.

Now, for the next billing PERIOD of 4/25-5/24 your PAYMENT date for that period would be on 4/17.
So you are paid until 5/24, and that should be your LAST FREE SERVICE PAYMENT.
BUT, on 5/17 you should be CHARGED for the next month's billing PERIOD, and that payment SHOULD BE the REGULAR rate of $60 for first line, $40 for the second, etc.

NOW, Sprint's computerized billing system may have a bug in it and NOT bill the regular rate on 5/17 since it still shows that you are paid until 5/24 on the free service system.

In this case, to be on the safe side one should port out BEFORE 5/17 and preferably a week before that around 5/10, unless you'd rather stay with Sprint at the regular rate.

There may be people here who have gone way past these safe dates and NOT billed the regular rate but it's just a matter of time before Sprint's billing system catches up with you!

Billing PERIODS and bill PAYMENT dates will be different for each subscriber, so one can estimate the safe date to port out and maybe get some additional free days past the 4/30/2020 free program's end.

Now, an unknown here would be what the new soon-to-be-merged company would do, lose all these expiring subscribers or make some special effort to retain them.

It may be that you are ordinarily billed a week in advance for a billing period that has not yet begun, for information purposes, but would you need to pay that amount if you ported out before the billing period did in fact begin?

I would not think so. That would amount to charging you for a billing cycle during no part of which you were a customer.

Maybe that is the simple explanation for why people are not being billed or charged in advance for the first full period after the free plan end date - they are not liable for it unless they continue on into the first full post-free-plan billing period..

I could be missing something - if so please let me know.

You're right that one would not be responsible if one ports out before the next billing period starts, BUT IF BILLED, then it would require calling Sprint and going thru the hassle of requesting a refund/credit back to the credit card and that can take a while.
Most people would not want to go thru this hassle for a few more days of free service.

You're also right that this is the simple explanation of not being billed/charged since one would still be paid in the free service period.
As I stated above, this may be a bug or an intentional billing in the Sprint system to avoid customer support complaints and charge backs to credit cards both of which are costly to the merchant.
This would result in some more free days of service, but is it worth it?

But, one should not be pushing the limits on this issue if one values his time/aggravation in arguing with Sprint reps requesting refunds/credits.

Hopefully, Sprint/T-Mo may make some extra special effort by the end of April not to lose all these expiring free accounts, especially those with multiple lines.
For instance, last fall Sprint had a special offer of $90 for 5 lines for one year that those currently with multiple lines may find it attractive enough to stay for at least another year. By then the Sprint/T-Mo merger will be effective and the entire cell provider market competitive picture will be very different.
