For less confusion I just go by Sprint generates bill at beginning(about Feb21) of current bill cycle(Feb18-Mar17) is due during current bill cycle(March 12) and covers service for current bill cycle(Feb18-Mar17).
You're right, this is very confusing. Sprint printing the wrong dates in the pdf statements doesn't help Confused

So my free plan ends 4/30/20, like most people. My billing period starts on the 2nd. So cancel on on 4/1/20 or 4/29/20 ?

Since the full billing period that crosses the date for end of the free plan is being billed as free, your dates are:

(1) latest 5/1 in your case according to the way Sprint has been billing

(2) latest 4/30 if you want to be extra cautious and go by the literal wording of your plan in case they fall back to manually interpreting the wording (which can happen in escalations/appeals etc.)

I would suggest using (2) and even a day or two before that.

This is subject to anything edog11 says. (edog11 please correct or restate if needed or helpful).

Latest would be 5/1. But it is recommended to start port several days before end of bill cycle to give extra time in case of porting delays. This is good practice with any plan.
As comintel stated porting several days before plan expiration(4/30) is the safest.

Those whose free plan expires on 4/30, should have gotten an email:

It's your Sprint anniversary! Celebrate with a $5 credit on your Sprint bill.
Open the My Sprint Rewards app and click the "Just for You"
button to redeem your gift.

Now, the deadline to claim is 3/27 BUT it takes 1-2 billing cycles to post, so it must be claimed asap.

i did call retention dept and they were ok to give KickStart for 35/m but not the 25/m that they are offering in BestBuy. I told the BB is also 35 but they mentioned $10 credit for byod but still no luck honoring the 25 offer of BB.
I've to port out and port in back though BB i guess
any cheapest port out for a day and port in back? options we have in wiki or other places?
I port in to Ultra Pay Go plan today morning and port in was very fast. Within 5 minutes, line was active. Called Ultra CS for account # and PIN and after so many questions they provided ac# and PIN. Called Sprint retention dept which Comintel mentioned in the landing page, rep is ready to give KS $35 with $50 one time credit. I requested for $10 credit, no luck. I missed that part that we need to wait for one or two days after port out or cancellation. I will try them again in another two days. Experts, What is your comment?. Will they give $25 with out going to BB or Is it available only in BB with unlocked device purchase?.

Nobody has got $25 Kickstart from Sprint Retentions or Recovery at all..

For $25 Kickstart, you have to go to BestBuy.

However, check the BestBuy Kickstart offer threads but people have posted there that they bought a Moto e6 for $50 with $50 discount, so effectively free to get $25 Kickstart plus a free phone as well!. However those details are changing and that exact phone and price may have changed. There are more details in those threads.

Thanks - I think there may be an issue of Best Buy having taken out Sprint as a listed eligible carrier for that particular phone offer on the web site. However according to one post you can still use Sprint anyway.

Please see Desi's post on this also. If you still have problems, you may have to buy some other lower-cost phone. Or buy a phone and plan and cancel it later etc. Also, as a long shot, maybe the rep will let you do it with BYOD. One BestBuy employee posted on reddit that he was allowing BYOD's in his store for that offer but that has not been confirmed elsewhere.

I think the best approach may be to go a BestBuy store and see what is the best deal you can work out.
