Update: Proton VPN Free is now on Waitlist, but you can still sign up.

Proton VPN free for everyone.

After more than 1 year of development, and four months of beta testing by over 10'000 members of the ProtonMail community, we're finally making ProtonVPN available to everyone.
...
However, we have done more than make ProtonVPN free. We have also worked to make it the best VPN service ever created, by addressing many of the common pitfalls with VPNs. For example, ProtonVPN features a Secure Core architecture which routes traffic through multiple encrypted tunnels in multiple countries to better defend against network based attacks, and also features seamless integration with the Tor anonymity network. You can learn about all the steps we took to build a secure VPN here.

Lastly, we're building a VPN service that can be worthy of your trust. We understand that when it comes to VPNs, trust is paramount. Whether it is our transparent VPN threat model, our Swiss jurisdiction, our reputation, our relationship with the community, or the fact that you actually know who we are, we're committed to building and operating ProtonVPN with the same level of transparency that has come to characterize ProtonMail.

.... Unlike companies like Google and Facebook who abuse user privacy to sell advertisements, ProtonMail and ProtonVPN are entirely dependent on users upgrading to paid accounts to cover operating expenses. Without your support, these projects would not be able to thrive and grow. If you appreciate the security and privacy that ProtonVPN provides, and have the means to do so, please consider upgrading to a paid account. This allows us to support the millions around the world without these means.. Full Press Release here [protonvpn.com]

I THINK super easy. I think they have their own program that connects. So you just download, log in, and choose a server.

Personally, using this for iOS is a major task commitment which requires a PC connection, iTunes, and tons of steps that's probably better spent in the gym. But that doesn't mean others might not like it.

Here's the link for the directions:

Normally, I would agree with you, but this is from the same people who made ProtonMail - secure and private email.

.....and I'm stuck to: When I tap the email attachment in the protonmail, the option 'Copy to OpenVPN' doesn't appear in the list.

Not trying to threadcrap, as some folks may still find a use for this and I'm not going to complain about FREE, but... Unless I'm missing something, the free offering is for 1 connection at low speed in 3 countries and does NOT route your traffic through their "secure core." Nevertheless, thanks for posting!

Because the company can stay afloat off the end users paying cash. This lets the software devs/employees feed their family, and live, for their time.

If someone is giving me a free anything that takes them a long time and resources to dev/make I am suspicious. They have to get paid at the end of the day. If there are no ads how so they get paid and stay afloat? Even a 100% honest person will steal bread so they can continue to love and provide for their family of they have no other options. This is not mentioning paying electric bills to power computers to program or even rent money

With that said there seems to be. A premium version and that's where they get their cash to feed their family so they hopefully don't steal from free users in anyway to make ends meet.

the feds pay them so they can copy your data unencrypted. yay
The feds don't need to pay for that, they have spyware installed on the servers so they can get it for free.

By the way, the feds have admitted to running free services to mine data.

Because nothing is free. If you pay, then you are a customer. If you don't pay, then you are the product.
