A few of those 1-star reviews seem to be user error. Yes, you will read about a product not working, as with any product, but I see way more positive reviews of people using the device successfully to view what's on their drives. I'd say a minority use this device for cloning, and most use the device for viewing files quickly on a drive that normally was just collecting dust in an older pc or laptop.

As opposed to this observation:

I read another 2-star review of somebody who could not format an 8TB Seagate drive. Well, for one, I'm hooking it up directly to my mobo. Due to USB devices not being 100% reliable for any extended period of time due to the nature of a USB device in general, it's just good sense to avoid formatting such a large drive that is connected to a simple external connection device. Format it directly, then install it via connection device thereafter. In addition, if users are not using the power supply, they will be subject to even more power fluctuations which will certainly turn on/off the device at random. I read one review where a problem occurred seemingly when not using the power supply. This is why a power supply...is supplied with the product. You need a steady current of power, not an exclusive USB current, incapable of managing a steady flow of the required power.
Be careful with this. I bought the same model a little while back and had serious issues with it. I'm not sure whether it was the cable that came with it or the dock itself, but somewhere along the line, the product was shorting out my computers USB interface. Clearly a serious issue. I didn't see any other reviewers complaining about this, so I wrote it off as a fluke.. But I did end up returning it instead of requesting a replacement. It's the same hardware as a few other cheap Chinese docks you can get off Amazon/Newegg/etc.

Also, their support (who was a pain to get in contact with) was convinced I was not using the power supply, when indeed I was. I also confirmed that it was working.

What happens if you don't use the power adapter? Will it simply not work?

Some of you must be blind if you didn't read the spotty reviews for this product.

Fakespot says 80% for the reviews (http://fakespot.com/product/idson...dd-u3201-1). I was looking for something like this. Will probably have to get this one.

I need one of these but it's to replace my older dock that is having some connection issues during longer transfers. Reliability is the #1 concern for me.

Most usb 3.0 docks don't have the clone feature. It's awesome.

Thanks!

In for one, thanks OP! I needed something like this, providing tech support to my entire extended family. (It's all good, they cook and clean for me over the holidays.)

Quote from 2-star review :
Inserting or removing 1 drive resets the I/O bus and causes the existing drive to disconnect. So using this as a rig to wipe old drives is very frustrating because you can't really insert/remove drives independently without messing up the other drive in the dock. If I was in the market for this again I would buy the slightly more expensive ones which don't have this issue.

This is one of the best things I have ever bought. So easy to use. Just make sure you r-click on the drive to make it go "online", if not it will show offline and you will think the device is not picking up the drive properly.

Very nice, The clone feature is nice and this would be a nice upgrade from my single bay dock and would speed up the process of cloning drives when switching to an SSD (no installing cloning software on every PC).

Would this work for a ghetto NAS setup?
