Traveling to New York

690 513 September 26, 2017 at 08:23 PM
In April I will be going to the USBC Open Championships in Syracuse. Afterwords, my wife and I are planning to go to NYC for 2-3 days. Plane tickets and hotels will be free from cc sign up offers on amex delta cards and chase ihg cards. We are from MN, know nothing about New York, and will never go back again. I was thinking the Staybridge Suites in time square, as I have about 40 k pts per night for 3 nights available for this leg of the trip.

Few questions...

Car rental the best option to go from Syracuse to NYC?

Staybride Suites in time square seem like a reasonable option?

Besides seeing a Broadway show, central park, and trying some pizza...what other things should we consider? Tourist stuff is fine, or a local rooftop bar would be cool. Our
twins will be 2.5 at that time, and we have never been away so it will be fun no matter what... we are pretty simple people.

We are not interested in any day long activities, or things that take extensive traveling, etc.

I like doing the hop-on, hop-off bus tours when in a new city. I grew up an hour from NYC, but we still did one of those tours when I took my family to visit several years ago.

You can get discounted same-day broadway tickets at a TKTS booth [tdf.org] in Time Square. The downside is that you might have to be flexible about which show you want to see.

laugh out loud where in Syracuse? I'm from that area and (used to be) an active bowler.... and can't think of a decent set of alleys anywhere in the area.

Oh wait I see they are setting up temporary lanes in the oncenter. Huh.

Anyway, SYR to NYC is going to be 5-6 hours by car via 91/87 (all NYS Thruway). I've been to NYC many times, now living in CT, but ironically never went there until I moved to CT in my early 20's.

This is my second time going, the tournament is awesome - and even though its referred to as "nationals", there is no qualifying required. It travels around every year, but is in Reno or Vegas a little more than half the time. They set it up in different convention centers, I think its usually 48ish lanes.

Thank you, I read about that - unfortunately it has to be the lion king. I am not TOO worried about the budget since the hotel and air will be free, and this will be the only real expensive outing we do. Just looking for fun stuff to do that is close to within walking distance (don't want to have to spend over a hundred dollars a day on taxis/ubers).

Thanks again everyone for the help so far!

Walking across Brooklyn Bridge is nice. Grimaldi's Pizza is nearby on the Brooklyn side. Supposedly a good pizza place.

Tram ride from 59st to Roosevelt Island is nice. I'd put it down the list though.
