Craftsman 57915 3/4 Horsepower Ultra -Quiet Belt Drive Garage Door Opener with WI-FI Connectivity

http://www.sears.com/craftsman-57...ockType=G6

$179.99 + whatever SYWR points or coupons you have (a lot of the $ off coupons weren't working, but I was getting 15% back on points). After using my existing points, I'm also getting $25 back in SYWR points.

I have been checking out openers for a few days, and decided on this one because it has built-in WiFi and doesn't require some extra controller like the others out there (MyQ / Aladdin / etc). It is a newer model too, 3/4 HP, and belt drive.

Since it's new with straight WiFi, I'm hoping that Smartthings support will be more likely vs. MyQ / Aladdin which are definitely not supported.

I've installed 2 sears belt drive openers, they are whisper quiet the chain drives sound like meat grinders in comparison.

Coupons don't work, but FREECASH (what used to be called surprise points) works.

$15 off with FREECASH, and $30 back in points. Might have to bit on this deal. I have an old belt 1/2 AC horse drive Craftsman, it is feeling the age and have replaced the belt once.

Might have to bite on this deal. Been wanting a quieter DC model, and I like the phone app to open the door for the kids, because they ALWAYS forget to bring the remote opener with them and get locked out of the house, and kids will NEVER forget to bring their smartphone.

Let's hope.

I'm thinking to buy this. But since a garage door opener should last at least ten years, I'm worried that the app won't be supported at some point.

Think about how much will change in 10 years. Sears might go bankrupt, will go through probably 4 or 5 smartphones and various operating system upgrades. If the smartphone app isn't maintained and upgraded by someone, as some point it won't even work on the latest smartphone with the latest OS.

Oh well, I guess if that happens, it just becomes a regular garage door opener.

Also, from what I read in the owner's manual, the garage door opener and the smartphone must have wifi. So if you are outside at the end of the driveway, and don't have good wifi, I'm guessing the door won't open. I can understand the garage door opener must have wifi, but what about the phone? Will the phone work with cellphone signal? Or must the phone also get wifi.

With other systems, you can basically use your smartphone app anywhere in the world to control the door (wifi, cell service, whatever), but with the Sears version the phone has to actually be connected to the Home's SSID wifi. Can anyone that has this confirm that?

no wifi, and also not in stock for shipping. the ones with battery backup didn't seem like a valuable feature unless you had some unusual need like a business or you live in Iraq

That's the old style that has some kind of module that you plug into your router and has a power cord.

This new model has built in wifi. So, newer technology.

The one you list is being Clearance out. Not sure I would want something Sears is getting rid of.

They do make the new wifi version with battery backup, but is more money.

The problem with those battery backups is that if you live where the garage temperature climbs into the 100s (like it does where I live), the battery in them doesn't last for crap, and you have to replace the battery ever couple years.

How do you know its old style, does the model no. Signifies it ? Also you have the Z-Wave controller hooked up to the opener, like i do , then you don't need Wi-Fi. In that case getting battery backup for the same price makes more sense even if it lasts 2 years.

you can't get it shipped though, so good luck finding it on clearance

Not trying to say that the deal I mentioned is better or worse, I was just wondering if it's a good deal in case you can find it in store which I did in Memphis TN.
