because your carboy is clear, make sure its out of direct sunlight and if possible out of light in general... when i use carboys i typically just cover it with a towel or two, then when you want to get a quick peek, take it off to watch fermentation...

did u heat that syrup can(lid open) in another pot with some water in it? that makes the syrup softer and easier to pour out...
