I personally disagree with payment plan discounts because you have to keep activated for 24mths or you lose the remaining discounts. Either way I believe this is the best deal so far on a great phone and good for some if they can keep the Pixel 2 for 24mths. Otherwise if you get new phone in 1yr you get an effective discount of $150.
I'm very happy with my Essential Phone I acquired last week for $155 after some super slickdealin, so I won't be buying a pixel 2.

Lol! Still for people planning on staying with verizon for 2 yrs 300 off with no trade in is a good deal. I'm in the same boat as OP with the essential deal. It's not quite on Par with the pixel 2 but it's close enough that at 150$ i decided it's worth keeping and i put my pixel 2 up on swappa
Lol there is a Sprint essential phone thread on here from 2 weeks ago that has like ~5000 post! It went like this: lease essential phone for $25 down $5/mth, lease you sign shows purchase option is remaining lease payments + $30 Pop, after buying or phone ships chat w Sprint online chat, ask to cancel lease and payoff to own, charge is 90+ 30, total cost is 25+90+30+ tax, wait ~2days after payoff and activation Prl update /UICC unlock in settings menu unlocks the uicc to be used by all carrier sims, Port out line for instant line cancel, escape Sprint with unlocked EP PH-1!! Grinning as you fade into the darkness..
I bought 3 and sold 2 extras for $380 profit, some people went nuts and opened 10 lines and then was allowed 10 more upgrades after 1st 10 paid off (yes 20 phones). It's probably way to late to pull any of this madness off still.
Check swappa / fleabay, so many Sprint "unlocked" phones hit the resale market so quick the market price plummeted. I think you can get one for ~$320 on swappa BNIB.

Yep I would only want the unlocked Google store version as well. So 128gb P2 XL would be $800 more for me for not much more phone. EP has incredible size for large screen phone compared to these tall skinny aspect ratio phones. PH-1 Camera is actually getting pretty good, portrait mode and quality improvement in latest update (11/29). P2 cam is better because literally the best out there.
Essential products is supporting the crap out of this phone by listening and fixing with fast direct pushed updates.
