You're right in that a front facing camera is limited. They make dual camera ones, but they are more expensive/complicated to install (and/or record the cabin and YOU while driving- pros and cons).
That said: I have one in all our cars. Have come in handy twice in last couple years.

1. Someone turned left right in front of me (my right of way) - submitted video to the insurance and they waived deductible. Other driver's insurance company didn't even contest fault.
2. My brother in law stopped/yielded to a pedestrian at a cross-walk and got rear ended. While video doesn't show the actual collision, it showed he properly yielded/stopped legally etc.
Video takes a lot of the "he said she said" aspect out of insurance claims.

I mostly use G1W/G1WC versions - frequently on sale for $30. Buy an "add a fuse" and a cigarette outlet for a clean auto on/off install, and it's the best car accessory you can get . $50 tops.
Is that how the law works? As long as you rear end someone no matter what the situation is you're automatically at fault? Because I always thought a dash cam would help if someone randomly slammed their brakes going 45 mph for no good reason and tried to blame you for hitting them as to prove the driver was just a jackass. I could use some work on my car can I just brake check someone every couple of months and get free mechanic work done?

whatevs....I bought it.
I liked that it was small/unobtrusive, 1080p (I doubt 4K would be of any further benefit) and used capacitors that resist heat and cold better.

Why do we need these, i understand back up cams and why police or professional drivers have it. But this is a bit much. anyways for most part its facing front so if you hit some one from behind its your fault and you have video that can be used against you also. These repeated deals on these makes me want to get one but just can really see it 100 %

Actually, yes, that is how the law is written. If you're paying attention and not tailgating, you have those 2-3 seconds to also slam on your brakes to avoid collision. Extremely simple concept.

Any reason to get this over the $40 Yi aside from the smaller form factor?

That would be your fault. There does not need to be a reason the other person hit their brakes. You get nailed for following too close and you get the ticket and the blame.

On another note, the reason you get a camera (front facing even) is to alleviate any issues with red light runners, 4 way stop blunders, people backing into you to claim that you hit them, people that you could possibly hit coming out from between parked cars not in a crosswalk. There is an immense number of reasons to get one.

What's the add a fuse? I was wondering if these things just go on and off when the car is turned on and off.

Why would you voluntarily hand over video/evidence that could be used against you in a court of law?

Last I heard, there wasn't a law that said it was mandatory to hand over video footage if you have it.

JS...

There is a law, they can subpoena the footage if they know that it exist and if you don't hand it over it try to destroy it then you are in more trouble
