Bought these 10+ years ago and the upgrade. I practically throw them around/drop them/whatever. Still good.

It says it goes from 5 to 75 lbs in 2.5 lb increments. Does that mean there is like 50 to 52.5 to 55 to 57.5 etc...? At the gyms I go to, when dumbbells go up by 2.5 lb increments, it only does this for like, up to 50 lbs, and then it goes 55, 60, 65, 70, 75 -- like that.
Comes with 2 different size plates, 2.5lb and 5lb. Put 1x 2.5lb plate on and that is a 2.5lb increment that they're talking about.

Well these are smaller in length compared to bowflex so I think it's safe to say these are miles ahead of bowflex.

Sister likes these,
https://www.dickssportinggoods.co...lck24lbslc

takes 2 seconds to change from 3lb to __lb. Where as the Ironmasters it would take a lot longer.
Both the bowflex 552s and 1090s can be unwieldy for some exercises... and the fact that they use plastic for certain parts should be a major concern for anyone used to dropping their weights... but I love mine.

I'd absolutely consider getting a set of Ironmasters--especially since they also sell a curl bar! Can't get that with Bowflex or Powerblocks. I see they also have a straight bar accessory which might also be useful for benching (the weight limit is only 210 though...).

Bowflex is the long one. Because of the way they are designed, a Bowflex dumbbell is always the same length no matter the weight. For example, the SelectTech 552 is always 16" long whether you are using 5 lbs or 50 lbs. Also, IMO the Bowflex is not as robust as the Powerblocks or IronMasters.

These IMs are definitely a better buy, but changing the weight is not as simple & quick as with the Bowflex or Powerblock. And as you get into heavier weights, you will find yourself spending quite some time changing weights between exercises.

My recommendation would be to get the Powerblock U-70 or U-90 sets, depending how much max weight you aim to lift.

If you don't care for the Urethane coating & life-time warranty, then you can also look at the Sport EXP series
http://www.powerblock.com/Sport%2...%20Set.php
Anyone who's ever worked out with freeweights at the gym wouldn't be deterred by the effort involved. I've watched the videos, and the ironmaster looks like a fantastic set. 30 seconds between sets to swap weights would be a non-issue for me as I like to have at least a 1-2 minute cooldown between sets. Peace

Ah, so these might be overkill for me. They just looked so nice...so much nicer than the Bowflex. Say husband ever decided to start using them, it looks like they can be built upon, and he would also find value in the ones you guys suggested?

Edit: Also, why do I care about Urethane? Longevity?
The Bowflex Selecttech sets are great for what they are--a little overpriced at this point, but I've noticed some improvements over the years (I've gone through 3 sets for various reasons).

For lady's most would recommend the powerblocks that go up to 24#, but I think the selecttech 552's would be better for you, if your husband also uses them. I really like how the 552 set goes in 2.5# increments (starting at 5) up to 25.

I've since modified the handle so it would be thinner. Better for my Trump-like hands lol
They must be the biggest hands--the best hands ever. Cool

These probably won't go below $499 again.

If you need a bench, people really like the ironmaster bench - you can create a custom package and get the bench, the dumbbells and the 120lb add on kit for pretty good price.

If you get the 120lb add on, I recommend calling in and ordering the extra set of handles (without screws) - makes for much easier

Also recommend some 2.5lb platemates (or a DIY set of magnetic plates) to save some time on 5lb increases.

I think these are good, not great - if you have the space, I'd vote for the fixed dumbbells.

These are the best adjustable dumbbells out there, they are more expensive than the rest at 75lbs, but with the add on kit, they are priced competitively compared to the other 120lb options.

I like these better than using a dumbbell handle + standard plates (like what Rogue recently came out with) because these are flat at the ends so much easier to go from your thighs into a bench press.

Powerblocks have them but it's only for the urethane version =/. They use to make it for the classics I believe but they discontinued it. Ah another thing I'm not fond of with powerbocks is they discontinue lots of versions of things lol which seems like on a regular basis but not really.

The Ironmaster straight bar I suppose you could bench with it if you find a bench with arms being narrow enough. But then it might be blocking where you put your grip.

Probably could get a way with using a normal spinlock bar instead of the one Ironmaster makes if you don't mind it spinning on your bar. That's the only difference I see with Ironmasters bar vs a normal spinlock one. I'm going to test it out later, cause now I'm wondering if that would be a nuisance to do ha.

These are the best adjustable dumbbells on the market. I've tried them all and these feel the most natural. A must have for a small apartment. Only downside is the adjustment takes some time compared to others. If you get these I'd recommend you still have a couple lower weight free weights especially if you do supersets. I bought a couple years ago at full price and do not regret it one bit.

I was looking at these even though they only go up to 55lb. Are the Ironmasters worth more than double the price of these?

My opinion:
Those looks similar to the Bowflex adjustable DB's. I would consider the weight. If you are just starting out, 55lbs might sound like plenty to work with, but there are some exercise's you will quickly max out and wish you had more. The Ironmasters can be expanded beyond the 75lbs when you are ready. I think Ironmasters are also a better investment. Take a look at craigslist and see what they sell for, you will be able to recoup a lot of your investment if you decided to sell them.

Thanks for the advice. I'm not a beginner so I'll already be maxed out on a couple exercises. I'm glad the ironmaster will be on sale until the 31st so that will give me a little more time to decide.

I'm aleady getting rid of the Bowflex. They are just far too long for me. i'm deciding between the U-90s and these, I think.

These take too long to change in the lower weight range. Where these actually shine is when you get the 125 kit and get into the heavier weights. I've had them all. Powerblocks are too weird of a design. I prefer a normal dumbbell shape. I actually prefer the bowflex up to 55 lbs and then get 60, 70, 80, 90, 100 db pairs on Craigslist. Right now I have the bowflex that go up to 90 but they are too big. Going back to the 55 Bowflex with the db pairs mentioned above. The only knock people have with the 55 set from Bowflex is that they are plastic and if you drop them then they will break. But if you are only going up to 55 why would you need to drop them? That's a light enough weight where you can control it

I have powerblocks and those these dumbbells. I saw the comments and thought i bought the wrong one but i went to go watch a youtube video and the weight changing and removing system is terrible compared to powerblocks.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rU5YtS5J-go Go to 4:50 in the video.

It takes the guy almost a minute to change the weights. Even if you shave it off by half then it would still take longer than powerblocks. That was only 20 lbs. I can go from 10 to 70 lbs in the powerblocks in less than 10 seconds.

Like I said. I don't have these dumbbells but the system isnt convenient to me.

So I was all set to buy the Ironmasters this morning when I ran across this set. Has anyone used these before? The price seems too good to be true when compared to the competition.

To answer my own question, the ironmasters have the lifetime warranty and I can also expand the weight past 75. I'm going to go ahead and get the ironmasters since they are sale. Time to get swole lol.
