Baratza is a solid grinder. I did a ton of research on Burr grinders and you won't find one worth a damn for less than $100. I have an encore which is a step down from this one.
Wirecutter places the Baratza Encore at the top of its list with the Virtuoso as an upgrade option: https://thewirecutter.com/reviews...e-grinder/
I was able to get the Encore at 50% off last September when Starbucks' online store went out-of-business.
Was totally going to post that too and comment on the irony dripping off the fact that both these "deals" showed up on the first page of the Hot Deals subforum. But you beat me to it.

Yeah....but unrelated.
The coffee gods must be out tonight...
All I know is Burr grinders are supposedly superior to my single blade (think Cuisinart or blender type) Braun...
I got one of these a few years back on a williams sonoma clearance for under 100. I like it a lot more than the cuisinart burr grinder I replaced. The little timer dial falls off from time to time, but otherwise it is a nice unit.
I know blade grinders are not good because of uneven grind size. I also know that grinding right before you brew is best. So here's my question. For those that don't want to spend a lot of money on a grinder is it better to use whole beans and using a blade grinder just before brewing or using store bought pre-ground coffee?

Whole beans + poor grinder. Form what I've read, the progression seems to be:
whole beans > grinder > brewing process > water
Someone who knows more or has a different opinion feel free to correct me

If those are the only choices, blade grinder before brewing.
That said, how cheap do you wanna be? I've had blade grinders and cheap burr grinders, and recently got a "midrange" $65 Capresso Infinity. Wirecutter's 3rd place in their burr grinder comparison.
The difference in coffee quality with an even grind is noticeable immediately. I don't do pour over or any other fancy stuff, I have the OXO Barista auto-drip (also fantastic) and even there you can tell the difference.
If you just want "a cup of joe" - buy whole beans, use the blade grinder and a Mr Coffee. A good burr and brewer (under $200 total) will make you LOVE coffee though.
