Just got my Costco coupon book for February. Item # 9950403, which is the same as the TCL 55S405, will be $350 starting 2/8. Not as slick as the $315 target price on black Friday, but the extra $35 will get you Costco's 2 yr warranty.
If you purchase something through a post on our site, Slickdeals may get a small share of the sale.

Sale goes live 2/8/2018. You won't see it online until then.

Picture Settings for the S401/403/405

For cable/satellite TV:

TV Brightness: Brighter
Picture Mode: Normal For Roku apps, use Vivid

Advanced Picture Settings:
Dynamic Contrast: high for Roku apps, turn off
Backlight: 100
Brightness 42
Contrast 100
Sharpness 66
Color 55
Tint 0
Color Temperature cool

Depending on your room, tweak from here. Some may prefer a normal color temperature to cool, but it will decrease the peak brightness and whites of the set.
Picture Settings for the S401/403/405

The settings above will produce a wildly inaccurate picture. The "Movie" preset with Warm white and Color left at its default value of 45 gave Rtings a relatively clean picture, and that's my experience with an S405 as well. See https://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews...5/settings.

Here's the truth about TCL tv's. I've got a 4-5 year old 40" 1080p CFL back lit LCD, which has a Samsung panel. I also have the $315 Target S405 model. Both are calibrated for an excellent picture. My main set is a Panasonic 65VT60 flagship plasma.

The 40" has a better picture for cable/satellite feeds than the 55" S405. Blu-ray and 4K are better on the S405, as is XBOX One S gaming.

The Roku in the S405 destroys my Panasonic plasma's smart function, as well as my Fire TV with Kodi, and Google Chromecast with a Mini.

The only issues I have with the S405 is the off axis angle, black level when off axis, and the warm settings on the set. It gets plenty bright, and has a very nice picture. But due to the LED's, the white's will never get to where a plasma or OLED will be. Just a hint of blue.

The S405 doesn't get super bright. So make sure you keep up with the NITS on RTINGS as far as the TCL sets go. I can darken our rooms. But if you have a 2 story great room loaded with windows, you will want the TCL flagship set that will get above 600 NITS sustained. Not sub 200 like the S405 model.

PM me if anyone wants settings on the S401/403/405 sets. Once you tweak this set, you'll never return it. It's that good for a sub $350 55" LED 4K TV.

4 year warranty with a Costco credit card ( 2 + 2 = 4 ) and you get a 90-day return policy for any reason.

If $350 is the budget and your TV just died three days before Superbowl, go for it. Otherwise in three months the 2018 5 Series line up should destroy this model. Yes at a price, but one that makes a lot of sense.

The "s" series TCL TV's are not nearly as good as the ones with C or P in the model number.

The new 2018 TCL 4K tvs shown at CES are the real deal (6 series). They are keeping the same pricing structure as the 2017 models but adding much more technology. Also they look better too. They don't look cheap, they have a metal looking perimeter.

Should be out in a few months. I figure I'll wait for the 2018 models and that will future proof me a bit longer because the 2018 models are borderline a steal with the amount of even back lighting they have.

The msrp for the s series is $499 for the 55". I would imagine the 5 series will sell at that price for a while before it starts going on sale in the $300-400 range like the current model. So waiting a couple of months might turn in to a bit longer than you are expecting.

Thanks for the heads up op. I was going to buy this set this weekend for $369 for my patio, now I'll wait.

FYI the 55" c series is back online at costco. Unfortunately it's $499 and not the $450 they had it at before Christmas.

Debating if the c is worth $150 more than the s.
