You need at least two MoCA devices to get a network setup. It could be two of these devices, it could be one of these devices and an ethernet-only extender (model ECB2500V), it could be a verizon fios branded MoCA router (models G1100, MI424WR revision I...which are the colors black and red), it could be an Xfinity gateway that supports MoCA (models DPC3941T, TG852G...i also think there is an Arris white colored one you can buy in a store like Target, I just dont remember the model), it could be a MoCA 2.0 device (e.g. WCB6200Q).

You dont necessarily need to connect them to a router to make them function. Just need 2 to create the network - just connect a computer on each end, set them to manual IP, and then you can do some LAN gaming or network sharing. Doing just that would be the equivalent of connecting 2 PC's by a crossover ethernet cable, or 2 ethernet cables to a network switch. Of course the whole intent of coax networking is to distribute an existing internet network over coax...heh.

ok,

If I have a big house that the wifi router cannot provide coverage for the whole house.
wifi repeater is crap. I don't want to use it. it cut the speed in half. terrible lag.
Powerline most of them also garbage. Need to reset few time a month.

What is the advantage of using MoCA device over the Powerline, wifi repeater?

awesome. can you post that firmware and flash instructions?
Here you go: flash at your own risk. Worked on my two units. https://www.dropbox.com/s/u1ds8ug...8r-act.zip

This also lets you disable TR-069 if you visit the web page adv_tr69.html I would also recommend disabling WPS.

To install just go to firmware upgrade.

MoCa is as good as wired ethernet, in the case of these boxes... Like 140mbps ethernet. Length and amount of splits should not affect it, nor the issue that powerline has of bring on different breakers.

For perspective, my house has a 10-way coax splitter (not amped). One of the splits is split again into two... One to this box... The other to an HDHomeRun.

Another split is going to an old MoCa router-turned-bridge.

The wires are a mess of old rg59 and rg6. Some aren't even terminated properly... Using screw on connectors... Not the crimp on kind.

Exactly the same speed as end-to-end with no splits..

Its basically equal to a 20-1 splitter.

Lon Seidman has a good video reviewing this technology on YT. Definitely worth checking out

There are a couple of thoughts I want to add about MOCA based on my own experience. I am using two Actiontec MOCA 1.1 adapters over a star-connected coax wired layout that is also used for Xfinity's X1 cable TV system and VOIP. Internet also provided by Xfinity comes into the house on a different feed (long story...). I use the MOCA adapters on open ends of the coax star to connect to the primary router and to connect an access point (wired and wireless) at the far end of the house. The speed I get over MOCA approaches the 1.1 maximum even on 30+ year old coax. I want to note here that the coax star has an Xfinity amplifier/splitter at its core, and this has not caused connectivity problems (unlike the powerline I had been using, MOCA has be rock solid). From what little information I found, it does seem that Xfinity X1 makes some use of the MOCA frequency range for its own purposes (e.g. connecting primary and secondary cable boxes), but at least for me this has not caused any problems. Just as importantly, I gather that the Xfinity devices are MOCA 1.1. If you establish a network of MOCA devices, the speed is supposedly set by the slowest MOCA device. You may not get MOCA 2 speeds from MOCA 2 devices if there are MOCA 1.1 devices sharing the network. I hope this helps...

When you did this, was the SSID exactly the same as the one on the main router? I'm worried about my phone or laptop connecting to the slower extender WiFi instead of the main WiFi when in range of both, how can you tell which is which when looking at the networks on your phone or laptop?
Yes this copied the SSID and password as well as created a 5G one with same password. With a WiFi analyzer you can see it puts it on a different channel.

I don't have FIOS and no cable TV either. But find this could be useful to extend Wired Ethernet to places that have CATV outlets but not so easy to run Wired Ethernet (like needing to go upstairs). So in such cases, after reading stuff here and in reviews, a possible way to do it (likely better than using 2 of these) would be to get 1 of these and an Actiontec MI424WR Rev I from ebay for $15.
The Rev I if this works would then connect from its WAN port to the main router in the house and be able to distribute the network connectivity over both the coax as well as its LAN ports.
This gives the added option of using the REV I as a 4-port hub,.
Also, this would allow for a one to many coax connections if required in the future....such that the coax coming out of the Rev I would be connected to a splitter allowing for the Rev I to distribute to multiple extenders. (If you bought 2 of these now to extend and later found you need to connect a 3rd site, then you would need to buy 2 more versus get the rev I now and then add on single extenders as needed in the future).

That's what I did. A few MI424WR Rev I routers and two of these. Although you should plug it into the LAN port on it.

But yeah, if you need more ethernet ports but not 5GHz Wi-Fi, get the MI424WR for a few bucks more. The two ports on WCB3000N is okay for a lot of cases though.

Awesome deal just for the MoCA to Ethernet bridge. The AP is just icing on the cake.

Thanks!!!

I was looking at doing something like this and came across the Arris NVG468MQ on eBay: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Windstream-Arris-NVG468MQ-Frontier-Router/263321305446

It seems like a beast of a home router for a steal at $38 shipped. https://www.arris.com/globalassets/resources/data-sheets/nvg468mq.pdf

It has:
  • GigE ports, 4 LAN and 1 WAN
  • MoCA 2.0 at up to 600 Mbps
  • Concurrent Dual Band Wireless
  • 2.4 GHz 3x3 Wireless N 450
  • 5 GHz 4x4 Wireless AC 1733
  • Firewall and QoS if you're using it as a router.
  • VoIP and IPTV features that are likely irrelevant/unusable

The Frontier firmware probably disallows lots of the router functions, but it looks like it could be a fantastic MoCA to Gigabit Ethernet bridge aka Wireless Network Extender.

If you disable DHCP on the LAN side, you should be able to plug a LAN port into the existing network and have 5-600Mbps of bandwidth to any number of these via MoCA.

Yes, it's more expensive than $10, but if you're going to actually use the WiFi, it seems to be well worth the upgrade. 4x4 Wireless AC should be good for several years. The WCB3000N has old, insecure (for the wireless) firmware and won't have an upgrade in the future.

Buy 4 of these on eBay for $152, get a free Google Home Mini

I'm still researching the NVG468MQ, trying to find a reason it won't work, but I haven't found one yet. I'm thinking it will be a great WiFi upgrade for my parents' house.

Thoughts?

Ok, I'm intrigued by this device. Can anyone answer if these can be used as wifi extenders using the ethernet ports instead of using the coaxial port? I have an ethernet connection where I want to place this but I don't want to setup a repeater (cuts signal in half).

I want my wifi to be setup with the same wifi security at both the main router and this extender...

This WCB3000N and/or the MI424WR Rev I on eBay https://www.ebay.com/itm/Verizon-...2622200430 would be all you'd need for a wired connection to each device.

The Arris NVG468MQ (see my previous post) from eBay: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Windstre...3321305446 would be much better for improving WiFi coverage.

You could use a combination of all three, but it would downgrade the MoCa 2.0 on the Arris to MoCa 1.1 speeds, which is likely fine for most.

Should work just fine. The Coax (MoCa), Ethernet, and WiFi are all bridged to the LAN network. Pick any 2 or 3 and you should be golden.

It will work, but honestly, if you already have an Ethernet connection there, you're better off with an access point or an extra router in AP mode. Will cost more, but you'll have a better result.
