Sweetwater [sweetwater.com] has the Akai Professional LPD8 Wireless Pad Controller for 39.99 with free shipping (55% price drop according to froogle). This is a Bluetooth MIDI controller with 8 pads and 8 knobs. I first saw this on Ebay, also from Sweetwater as a seller.

Other reputable stores sell this new for $99.

Akai Professional LPD8 Wireless Features:
-USB/Bluetooth pad controller for your favorite virtual instruments
-Small enough to fit in a backpack and sit right in front of your keyboard
-8 backlit, velocity-sensitive pads deliver classic MPC feel
-Classic Full Level and Note Repeat functions make laying down beats easy
-8 Q-Link knobs control almost any parameter in software
-Store and recall your settings in 4 programmable memory banks
-Comes with editor software to make setting up programs simple
-Runs on bus power or 2 AA batteries for up to 12 hours of playing time
-Compatible with Mac, Windows, and iOS via USB and Bluetooth LE
-Includes Reason Lite DAW license

QA Edit: Now backordered, but still available for purchase.

I haven't tried this, but Sweetwater is offering an extra 10% on gift cards so you could potentially buy an e-gift card for $36.36 and get the bonus 10% and save a few bucks that way:

Is it better to get this and a separate keyboard or one of those combos with the pads and keyboard for like $80-$100

It really depends on your needs. The pads on this one will likely be better than the pads on most combo units. This one also has built in bluetooth and battery power - if that's a positive for you. If minimizing what you carry is a concern, a combo unit might still be the way to go for you.

Thanks! I tried this and was able to pick up the Akai LPD8 and a Hosa GPM-103 for $38.59 with free fedex shipping and no taxes Smilie

Gift card took about 10min (probably less) to get to my inbox.

whoa didn't even know this existed; I had the lpd8 and the usb micro cable always craps out (I've bought THREE over the past several years)

I love the device but hate the wires, this is exactly what I didn't even know i was looking for, thanks op!

I agree it depends on your needs, but I've owned the wired version of the LPD8 and this keyboard http://www.akaipro.com/products/k...-mini-mkii and the pads are the same. Can't speak for non-Akai keyboards.

Dunno about the pad, but Sweetwater is awesome. I bought my protools license from them years ago and they have been super helpful with getting me set up with a proper license and also took the time to answer any questions I had. I would almost always go to them if I purchase anything sound related.

The Reason Lite key makes this an even better deal.

If you buy this + upgrade to the full version of Reason ($399) it's like getting Reason for only $339 + a free controller.

if it's no shipping or tax, why 38.59?

for me 36.36 + 3.63 = 39.99 unless I missed something?

ahhh was about to buy when saw the review of someone not able to use on windows...

looking at akai site:

Can I use this with my Windows computer?

Yes, but it can only be connected via wired USB connection. Transferring MIDI via Bluetooth LE is not officially supported. Although workarounds do exist, latency is typically a factor that adversely affects workflow.
not gonna work for me, glad/disappointed I saw this Frown
