Ginger Beer is commonly used as a mixer for alcoholic drinks like Moscow Mules. In comparison to Ginger Ale (which has a sugary sweetness to it), Ginger Beers are more focused on a peppery spiciness. They do have some sweetness to it, but it's not a strong as in soft drinks. Some people drink them by themselves, but there's a decent amount of variation among the different brands in terms of how they taste, so your mileage will vary, and it's worth being familiar with the different brands.
I've tried Fever Tree and Q before. IMO, Fever Tree is a good brand to drink by itself. It's a bit more mild, not too peppery, but it does have a distinct taste. It's also fairly well carbonated so it gives you a good refreshing taste.
In comparison, Q is really peppery, almost to the point of spicy. It also has a fairly strong ginger aroma (though, it's nothing like chopping and eating raw ginger). I love using it as a mixer for drinks because it adds a lot more punch to whatever you're drinking. As an odd effect, if I bring a cup of Q Ginger Beer to my nose and inhale deeply, I sneeze every time (weird, I know). That might give some perspective on how peppery this brand is.
Q might be a bit rough as a solo drink for the uninitiated. I think it does better as a mixer and for people who really love spicy ginger beer.
