I actually take the other side with this. The XB30 definitely has "better" sound than the UE. I've had both and returned the UE. That may be because I got it at a great price used from a local ad, while I paid a bit more for the UE (on sale tho).

The UE has a boomy bass and the highs were too sharp for my taste. But when I really listen close to the XB30 it's sound is more balanced and true to the music. I really like it. It's more of a boxy traditional shape compared to the UE but that doesn't make much difference to me so it's an individual need/taste thing.

My advice is to listen to both for yourself. This is a fantastic little speaker with great battery life. And this is an excellent price from BB so if you don't like it returns are easy.

Good luck!
keep in mind SRS-XB30 needs its own AC adapter to charge, not microUSB.
Seems okay, but prices on eBay are showing $45 for a low, and $60 for a refurbished so decent for this well reviewed speaker. I almost jumped on it until I did a little more digging.

Well it's something I don't really need, and the price isn't as amazing as I first believed so if I want it later, I will grab it.

Can anyone compare this to the UE Boombox (grey one with handle). I am looking for an upgrade on par with that size, sound, volume etc.

Have been watching for the Boom or JBL Charge 3. Are those on par or would it be more like the Megaboom?

Any input appreciated.

I bought this the last time it was Deal Of The Day at BB for traveling purposes. Too bulky. Returned it for the UE Roll 2, also a DOTD, $20 cheaper however. I wasn't impressed with the overall sound of the Sony, size was too big for my intentions, and the lights flashing gimmic were a battery drainer and something I'd never use. I also have a UE MegaBoom which is my go to.
You can find better deals, and overall I think the Ultimate Ears are much better speakers.

Which UE did you have? The Megaboom?

I had the Boom and the Mega Boom. Neither sounded quite right to my ears. I'd say I preferred the Boom over the Mega tho. It doesn't try to be a big speaker and does do a nice job at sounding balanced. I just thought the Mega Boom tries too hard and comes out lacking in the mids and the bass seemed muddy. That's just me though, as I know a lot of people that love the UE line. They do sound good. I just like the more accurate and balanced sound of the Sony personally.

As a reference I almost always carry my Aiwa Exos 9 wherever I go. I believe it's the best bluetooth box out there but it's $300 and huge lol. We love it for road trips, but when we fly I just pop the XB30 in my bag and we're off. Sounds very nice and fills our hotel room with plenty of musical sound.

We also have a 2nd gen Bose Mini Soundlink. I think the Sony has a better sound, but somethimes I suspect we just got a bad sample of the Bose. It happens some times, and our friend has the same speaker and I swear his sounds better. So I need to sell that one I just keep forgetting.

Just curious the benefits of carrying around a Bluetooth speaker? Are you a music fanatic? Also why not just some good headphones?

Or you could go with upgraded version XB-31. Both sounds same as per many reviews but XB-31 has better sand/water proofing ratings, looks better, better bluetooth range and most importantly can be charged with any micro usb cable. I got manufacturer refurb XB-31 from eBay for $63 that appeared like new. But if someone is looking for Brand new item in a box then this is a really good deal

The UE Boombox (aluminum case and handle) is a pretty substantial speaker. (I have one too.) Megaboom might be more comparable than the Charge 3 or Boom.

Also I would think the Sony XB40 (bigger than the XB30) would be comparable, at least in regards to size and output level. I don't know how the sound compares exactly, but the XB40 in-store sounds very good. If you are near a Best Buy perhaps check the Megaboom & Sonys out to be sure.
