I'm always happy to pop in these threads and argue with elitist audiophiles who wanna gatekeep their hobby behind thousand dollar pay walls. The 100 isn't that bad. It's comparable to the at-lp60 that everyone also craps all over.

These are good entry level tables no matter what anyone is saying. They have built in preamps (aka plug and play) and will get you used to the feel of the hobby. I bought the lp60 myself and after 18 months replaced it because I ended up using it almost daily. There's no reason to spend a ton of money on something you might not care for, or for a novelty you'll use a few times per month. The 100 is a good way to test your interest. Then upgrade your speakers if you like it. Then the table. And in a year and a half if you've used it enough to justify a new table, you've gotten your money worth and can gift the 100 to a friend who is hesitantly interested like yourself. They aren't top tier but are better than the all in 1 units with the built in speakers by far.

It's fun to collect records. This will play them and you'll hear the sound. It's gonna sound as good as anything you're used to anyway. These people are so stubborn that they think a beginner can hear subtle nuances in the sound that aren't worth it for a potentially throwaway hobby.
I just bought 2 of these and a microphone. I'm all set.
I dunno much about these two specific players, but I can tell you this much. The 400 model looks like it can be calibrated to some degree, while the 100 cannot. Proper calibration will result in less pressure on your vinyl and even tracking - essentially less damage to your vinyl. Much of the calibration can be performed with two tools that'll cost you about ~$40 (scale and alignment protractor). Like many hobbies you can go for much much more expensive options to perform the calibration.

Also. Don't get into vinyl unless you've got a lot of extra money to burn. Mostly kidding but kinda true. Wink

Good turntable: Stable speed. Acceptable damping / isolation of motor. Good engineering of tonearm to prevent unwanted resonances. Decent cartridge. Decent electronics for up-amp and USB, if those features are implemented.

The TN-400S is a pretty good overall budget table.

The TN-100 is plasticy junk that doesn't sound good and won't last long.

Is the TN-100 worse than the AT-LP60? Just getting into this and not sure how long I will be intrigued, so don't want to drop more than $100.

If you don't mind spending some more than AT-LP 1240 is the way to go. Its a direct drive as compared to this one which is belt drive. Audio technica is a name in itself. It is compared to technics by geeks. Here is a link (remember doesn't come with a cartridge):

The amount of intrigue is proportional to the quality of the turntable. The better the turntable, the higher the fidelity, the more intriguing the hobby becomes.

Personally I'd steer you towards the LP60 or the USB version for ~$20 more if you want digital rips of your records. Audio Technica is definitely quality gear, and if you're just entering the market you don't need to spend more than $100 to get a decent entry level turntable. There's a lot of variables for audio quality (your turntable, amp, and output device), and if one of these is cheap it's going to lessen the impact of a more expensive rig anyway. What you will get out of a turntable cheap or expensive is a feel for the sound qualities of vinyl. Go crate dig at a bookshop or used record store; there's just as much charm to be found in lo-fi stuff.

I own the LP120 as I produce and DJ, and direct drive helps with this. Belt driven should be just fine while you evaluate your interests. Over time you can upgrade your cartridge, your cans, your amp, etc.

I've heard nothing but complaints about the 400s too. Stay away.
