Hmmm....I really want me and my kids to take up guitar. More so me...but do you start with electric or electric acoustic?

This is a perfect compromise. Should be loud enough unplugged to reasonably hear what you're playing.

If you plan on getting into it and committing to play often, an acoustic guitar would be better. The steel strings are thicker than electric and will build up hand strength and fingertip callouses much faster.

If you'll spend a few minutes every few days, and aren't really making progress, electric is probably better. The strings are less rigid and won't hurt your hand....and they're quieter than acoustic strings and less people will have to suffer listening to your failure at guitar haha!

Dang! I really didn't need a 12th guitar I can barely play. Oh well, in for one. I have always loved the Gretsch vibe.

I actually would recommend an electric for new people they are usually easier to move around the fretboard with and more fun to play... acoustic strings will hurt your fingers at first and have turned a few people I know off to getting better...
