GoFundMe advice

313 54 December 5, 2018 at 06:51 AM in Chat
I am NOT asking for money for my campaign. I am asking for brainstorming on how to get this going to help me get my family back on its feet.

I was the victim of a home burglary on Thanksgiving Day. I don't have Renter's Insurance (don't want to go into the reason why here) and lost pretty much everything. My GoFundMe to help my family get back on its feet hasn't really gotten anywhere. I am looking for advice on what to do to help it get out and spread and maybe find people that are willing to donate to the cause.

I have a former Playboy Playmate (from 1969) that opened the GoFundMe for my family. She has posted it on her Facebook fan page.

The campaign lists what happened, a list of some of the things that were taken and videos from the security system that were directly uploaded to the Internet that were completed before the network router was taken down. It has a list of things that needs to be replaced and an estimated cost. It goes into the background of each of us and what we have done for the community. There is a link to a "newsboard" type site where the issue is openly discussed and even mentions someone needs to do a GoFundMe but nobody did anything. The campaign states that there were other funds donated through another organization but that paid for the replacement of passports and a few other things not listed that are not part of this campaign.

There are photos of the police report with redacted sections of the full address, a couple of last names and signatures. I don't want people to know our full address nor the last name of a friend that helped us. Signatures were blocked out for obvious reasons.

Can you think of anything else that might be tried to help us?

I suspect this is a troll post. In the event that it is not, I advise OP to visit thrift shops for necessities.

Good luck!

Hard to tell. That or he's trying to gain empathy by repeatedly saying he moved from Albuquerque to Mexico to help the earthquake victims, and that he quit his day job and is a poor PhD student.

Clearly Ph.D level intelligence comes with little common sense.

Hey OP, I'm confused

You cannot have renters insurance in this country unless you have a lease. ... It came down to the insurance or moving the MIL down here.
But here you said your insurance policy doesn't kick on until the 23rd: yet: http://forum.notebookreview.com/t...t-10826918

So which one is it? Confused

OP - you're in a shitty situation, good luck!
Video/graphics work as part of being a Virtual Assistant. I was using multiple VMs and modeling different methods of clustering systems for academic reasons. I also used my system for video/graphical work in regards to an archaeological expedition that is in process. Lost all my data from that.

I thought what's wrong with the united states is everyone looking for a handout. *cough* OP *cough*

When people WANT to help, they do. But expecting people to help you replace your things is a little different than benevolent help.
So my assistance with Earthquake Recovery and rebuilding entire computer networks as a volunteer is meaningless? That my work towards helping archaeologists create better maps of sites via use of LIDAR and drones is meaningless?

I am willing to bet that the amount of charitable work and volunteer hours well surpasses 99% of Americans and definitely the amount you have in the last 10 years. You think I am looking for a handout when the truth is that I am looking to get the minimum amount to enable me to continue the work I have done for the poor and needy. Just how many hours of documented charitable work have you done in the last year? I have done over 2500 hours of it - all documented by various organizations throughout the United States and overseas.

Not a troll post nor will I find the things I need to continue my work in thrift shops. I need to recreate a networking lab that I used to teach Cisco networking to disadvantaged youth. I need to get computing equipment that will enable me to process large amounts of video and process it into 3D maps for archaeologists to use of new sites. I also would like to be able to continue my PhD studies that require enough computing power to properly model new ideas in regards to system clustering.

The problem is that I used the money to get the MIL down here. I have had renters insurance in the US - I cancelled it to pay for her trip down. American renter's insurance has a rider called "away from home coverage" that will cover up to 10% of the total policy while you are traveling away from home or in another country. I also noted that it was the 1st of December when it would have been in effect. I was going to be able to pay to have a new policy on the 23rd - my payday.

Mexico, where I am now and have spent the greater part of the last 15 months, you cannot get a renter's policy unless you have Temporary or Permanent Residency or are a citizen. That is why I couldn't have a policy written for Mexico specifically. Check with your own insurance agent about the "Away from home" coverage and how it works. Then ask them about getting renter's insurance in Mexico. They will tell you the entire process and what I said is true.

NOTE: When you visit sites that offer renter's insurance in Mexico, they do not tell you that you cannot get coverage while on a 180 day "tourist" card(FMM). They will ask for the residence permits at the time of when the coverage goes into effect. Anyone telling you that you just need a FMM is full of it. Mexico's laws say something entirely different and if you try to file a claim and only have a FMM it will be denied.

Good luck OP, competition is a bitch right now.

It's crazy how many people are asking for donations.
Went to the cvs earlier and bam the salvation army lady with the bell was at the door then the walmart
also had one. Even the local chicken place drive thru was asking for a donation.

I know all of this is going on. I just hope that I can get enough together to get the minimal equipment to be able to get back to working the relief effort and my research while getting a system that will meet the minimum requirements for my wife's work. Until we get that amount, we have no monies coming in, my teaching kids computers and networking, and my research are dead in the water.

I use thrift shops.

In any event, OP can get the stuff he needs from Costco, Then return it before the bill comes due. Rinse, cycle, repeat.

Better yet, he can form a caravan of PhD students and professors and all march to Honduras 🇭🇳.

All you need for that is two 2900 (don't get the 2900XL due to ios limitations) series switches and an 1800 series router. Or, let me give you all you need, right here. [netacad.com]

If you really want the physical hardware, hit up ewaste companies. I've sent hundreds of devices to recycling that would be all you need and more.

Editing for an add on. The computing equipment may be funded by the National Science Foundation and National Park Service as they are for other projects. Get that grant going.

There isn't a score card. You do the work because YOU want to. Not because one day you'll get to cash out all your volunteer work. So stop acting entitled like you deserve a handout.

You're right, I don't volunteer, but this isn't a penis measuring contest, and if it were, I'd win based on the number of lives I save on a yearly basis Dontknow
