The Ryzen 5 is better deal IMO, that's a $220 premium for a faster processor that doesn't help gaming too much, and an extra 8gb ram which is roughly $50

On Newegg the price for the 2400g is $160, the 2700 is $270 - $10 promo code. 8gb DDR4 is $50. Would you pay $220 for $150 worth of differences?
Ryzen 5 better value for gaming.
Ryzen 7 better fit for long CPU intensive tasks like video editing. Still good value!

Reasoning:
For 1080p gaming, the Ryzen 5 is no slouch (~10,000 Passmark cpu score) and 8GB system ram is enough. Same video card. You can always add another 8GB later for about $50 if the need arises. In this scenario, I'd buy the Ryzen 5. In most games at 1080p, you probably won't notice the difference between the systems, as the bottleneck would be the videocard, not the CPU.

The Ryzen 7 2700 processor is about 50% faster than the Ryzen 5 2400G. If you do a lot of cpu intense stuff like video editing that can literally take the computer hours to complete the task, then I would go for the Ryzen 7 version to save time.
These offer amazing value at their respective prices. I tried building similar specs over the weekend and these pre-built were around $200 cheaper.

Here's an example of similar build of the $529.99 version that comes out to around $700 after rebate hassle.

Note: There may be incompatibilities, but it's a ballpark example.

If there's a store near him he just needs to take the receipt to coustomer service and do it. I dont think they do that through the phone

Thank you. Which version would you purchase? Is the Ryzen 7 build worth the extra costs ?

Such a good deal if you take advantage of all available offers.

  • Paying with the Best Buy store or Visa cards earns 10% in rewards. Others mentioned this, but I couldn't confirm it for myself anywhere until I logged into my card account and saw a banner on the main page.

  • For those who don't have a Best Buy card, eBay and Samsung Pay have sales on Best Buy GCs.

  • RetailMeNot has a cashback offer for $40 back on purchases of $500 or more.

  • The included AMD "Raise the Game" bundle offers of pick of any two games from a selection of Resident Evil 2 (Remake), The Division 2 and Devil May Cry 5. If you're not interested in any of these, they should be popular and valuable titles when they launch so it'll be easy to sell the game codes for $20-$30 each.

I think this is a warm deal - that's considerable power at this price point. If you weighed it against the bitcoin-inflated $400 price tag of the RX580 earlier this year (I know, I bought one), then its an excellent deal.

The argument revolving around the 2400G cuts both ways:

The 2400G only has 8x PCI lanes through which to talk to a dedicated video card, instead of 16x on the non-G variants. It would likely be hard to tell any impact outside of synthetic benchmarks though.

On the flip side, if your RX580 suddenly dies one day, you can switch over to the integrated 'G' graphics and still have a usable computer while you remedy the situation.

I read in another thread the game codes were tied to the video card and cannot be used on other cards. Can someone confirm this?
