Amazon has the AC1900 class Netgear R6900P, wireless router for $94.99. There is an additional coupon of $20 on Netgear routers bringing it down to $74.99

No, you only have to pay if you use the software built into the routers for it. The hardware devices are no-subscription, unless you want mobile coverage outside the house.

Latest R6900 firmware update [netgear.com] was :07/16/2018
Where as the R7000 models firmware [netgear.com] was last updated: 12/04/2018
RT-AC68U firmware [asus.com]: Version 3.0.0.4.384.45149

The R6900 models were sold in Costco and hardly updated firmware... they do now, but rarely.
The Costco NETGEAR Nighthawk R6900 was a nerfed Retail model NETGEAR Nighthawk R7000.
Walmart and Target now ( I think ) carries the R6900 as well.
But it was a battle with NETGEAR Nighthawk R7000 vs ASUS RT-AC68U.
Forgot what the differences was its 4am
