It's because of a mismatch with the SATA standards.

I taped the pins on my 8TB (just used blue painter's tape) but you can also just use a Molex adapter.

When I jumped on this last 10TB deal (same product) a week or so ago, I got a 10TB that did NOT have to be taped/molex adaptered. It worked just fine in my Opti 7010 where my 8TB did initially have a problem due to PWDIS.
My 10TB EasyStore was a white-label HGST Helium-filled drive (SMART attribute #22 indicating helium, no breather hole, welded top cover) with 256MB cache and the following specs:

it doesn't take long to fill a 10TB NAS when it functions as a plex media server (holding 4k movies that often top 50gb each), DVR, backups of several computers, weeks of surveillance video, etc.

Anyone know if the EVGA 750PQ Platinum PSU needs the 3.3V trick?

It's not PSU dependant.

It's perplexing to me! I ordered 4 of these on the last sale, two were shrink-wrapped, two just had the clear round stickers sealing the box. Using the same SATA cable and power-supply cable the 2 shrink-wrapped units just worked. The other 2 that were in boxes with just the round clear seal required me to tape off pin #3 in order to be seen in the bios.

He's talking about using shucked white label drives internally. Some power supplies supply 3.3V at P3 which activates the PWDIS features on some drives, usually the shucked white label drives.

I got one last time, shucked and installed via sata without any modding. Pretty solid drive and deal.

Can you mix different sized HDD into a NAS/RAID setup? I have an 8TB external I plan to use and plan to buy 2 of this and put them in a NAS. Is it better to just buy 2 more 8TB drives instead of 2 10TB?

It depends on synology yes. On unraid yes. Freenas which uses zfs can be a little tricky to do.
