I picked up a pair of these at the last parking lot sale for 14.99, I will pick up another pair with the coupon thank you!

I've had 2 holding up the front end of my 76 Nova for 2 weeks so I figure they are strong enough and worth buying more of

I have been using 3 and 6 ton HF stands for years, but came across a post on GarageJournal that has me a little concerned:

I'm sure any brand of jackstands fail once in a while, that's why I never trust any of them. If I'm getting under a car I use jackstands, large pressure treated wood blocks and I have a few bottle jacks applying light pressure for good measure. I figure if all of that doesn't work then god really wants me dead

I'm not going under the nova I'm just waiting to get new wheels and tires and I wanted to stress test the stands so they are flying solo.

Everything has a lifespan, and 8 years is a pretty good run for $15 jackstands. Plus, it's not a mechanical failure (such as bending under load). The owner probably dropped it at some point and created a crack that eventually propagated to what you see in the picture.

This is a good reminder to quickly inspect each tool that your life may depend on, every time you use it.

Fortunately jack stands are engineered so if they break they usually catch enough of the car that it'll just crush you a little. You should always use two stands, I think. At least I do. If you're just doing one corner, leave the jack in place also.

When I had to lift my car with the 6 ton stands I had them about almost full height.. plus on a sloped driveway.. long story short it took about an hour to get the stands right so one was not going to tip backwards..

I ended up backing the car up on ramps and jacking the front up then doing the rear and left the ramps for safty.. Now getting it down was scarey.. Because I tried to do the rear first since it was the highest but it started to shift sideways when the weight was taken off the jack.. So I ended up using a screw jack on one side of the rear where a jack stand was so the car would not shift when the weight was off the jacks.. Finally I got the car down about 25 min later.

It got really crazy at first because the shift of the car caused the car to sit half on the ramp which started to tilt.

yeap I not longer just use jackstands. If the wheels come off I'll toss those under as well, leave the jack at almost lifting height. wheels chocked, e-brake set.

Newspaper so YMMV, K?
Man I've been looking for this coupon. Is this coupon still good today (7/10/12)?
I bought the 12 ton but want the 20 ton. I do like my 12 so perhaps it's not a big deal
if I don't get the 20 ton press.

Well I plan on changing out the shocks/struts on my 2.5 ton suv - u guys think 4 of those 3 ton jackstands is safe enough? Never done this b4 so the project will probably take me a whole day if things go smoothly.

In theory yes but if you want some insurance go out and buy 1 PT 2x8 and one PT 4x4. Jack up the car and put it on stands, measure the distance between the floor and the frame and cut the 4x4 to that length less 1.5 inches. Cut the 2x8 into 8 inch sections and nail the 4x4 into the middle of your 8"x8" bases.

These home made jackstands are very strong, I've been using them for years as a backup because I'm paranoid about store bought stands just make sure the post is secured to the base very well and you're good to go.

Or if you have the tools to cut a 6x6 you can foget using a base and just use blocks of 6x6
