I wonder if B&H or one of the other online retailers will match this price anytime soon. The Costco rebate and return policy is great, but sales tax in my state (WA) is onerous.

You're in WA, go take a weekend trip down to Portland to avoid sales tax!

Also can be had at any microcenter any time if you live near one. MC has been selling these at 1k since they were released but I know not everyone lives near a microcenter
Of course. This one comes with Costco amazing warranty and return policy.
I picked one up for $980 from B&H with no tax and free shipping in November 2018.
This is an okay deal with the awesome Costco warranty.
As far as the FaceTime video quality, it sucks really bad. After comparing it to my 2013 MacBook Air, that looks better, I thought of returning it until I found out that it's not just with this model. Apple really dropped the ball on the camera hardware / photo light sensor. I called Apple support and they're aware of the problem and they are doing nothing about it.
Otherwise, it's been great with the Retina display and revised keyboard.
First, you're buying from a real and reputable store, Costco, with free extended warranty (Manufacturer's 1 year, Costco +1 year, and Citi Costco credit card +2 years consecutively)
Second, there is such thing as Apple Authorized Resellers (https://www.macprices.net/resellers.shtml) for those of us old enough to remember what buying Macs were like before the advent of Apple Stores. If you're buying from somewhere other than Apple, it should be an Apple Authorized Reseller (which include most big-box chains, cell phone carriers, photography and music supply stores, university book stores, and many local Mac stores) if you want the warranty to be recognized from the sale date. When buying from a small-time (or volume) reseller scumbag on fleaBay, the warranty has usually started and is halfway over by the time you get it, not to mention it may be stolen goods, fake, or used/salvage w/ non-genuine parts masquerading as "new (other)".

I want to buy some kind of mac to try out macOS. I've been looking at older items on ebay like 2015 MBP. But as you likely know it is packed with questionable poorly taken care of laptops that are a gamble.
I did some research on the processor this 2018 Air has (i5-8210Y) and my 3 yr old Thinkpad i7-5600U, which is no powerhouse either, out benchmarks it. It is just a hard sell. I feel like I would be taking a step backwards and a smaller screen.
So you're saying you get a 4 yr warr with Citi Costco purchase? I have the Citi Costco card so I get your point there.
