When you've got something relevant to post about Target coupons, please post about it in the Target coupon thread! OK, baby boy went into to the doc's office today because the asshats messed up his PKU test and he had to be "re-stuck." Crying I hate that so much! He was bleeding everywhere. . .

Anyway, while we were there, they weighed him and he's only gained like 10 oz. in the last 3 weeks. Sadwalk I feel like the sh!ttiest mother ever and I don't know what to do.

I told my DH I was going to feed him more often, but now as I'm writing this the little bug is fast asleep. Should I wake him up and try to feed him? When I do that he usually gives me the "pursed lip" look, which I actually find pretty funny, but it's frustrating when I've got breastmilk dripping everywhere. (sorry if TMI)
I DONT' WANT TO HEAR THAT!!!! You are a great mother for even keeping up with nursing this long. Anyone that has done it knows its not easy in the beginning.
If the Dr. is not concerned, than you shouldn't be either. Babies go through spurts so you might have gone for a weigh in in between one of the spurts and who knows, he could gain quite a bit in the next few days and a weigh in by Monday could be a whole new number.
If he was hungry, he would let you know! And until the Dr. is concerned with it, you just relax. Trust all of us!

Thanks! Yeah, he was back to birth weight by 10 days out, which made me happy. I guess that's what concerned me; it seemed like before he was gaining weight well, and now not so much. I usually let him nurse for 30-45 minutes (he'd like to go longer a lot of the time, but the lactation consultant said not to) so I figure he's got to be getting the good stuff by then, right?
If it helps at all, sb - my Wyatt just turned 2. When he was born at 36 weeks he weighed in at 9lb 7oz - should have seen the doc's eyes when she looked at him! OMG He was off the high end of the charts for the first month, and then was in the 15-20th percentile (scrawny!) until his last checkup when he finally made it back into the 40th. woot

My kids were both so different on the scales it's ridiculous, but they're both happy and healthy (my other one is 14, and she's 5'7 and 110 lbs, but was 9lb 9oz at birth). I'm sure your little guy will sprout up one of these days too!

Wake a sleeping baby? Bite your tongue SBMommy. Wink

Seriously though, as long as your pedi isn't worried, you are in the clear. He will gain weight for sure. BF babies just do it a bit slower at first, but he will catch up. As long as you're feeding him when he wants it, it's all good. Quite the contrary, it sounds like you're doing a great job! Comfort I picked up and caressed a bottle of chardonnay at the grocery tonight. I am in the clear for an occasional glass since I am in the 2nd trimester but I am so exhausted (still) that I would probably pass out after one sip. So back on the shelf the bottle went.

I am sure he is doing fine and it doesn't sound like you need to worry. I was talking to the lactation consultant last month and her advice was that if the baby hasn't seemed hungry or nursed at 2 to 2.5 hours then wake him up and try to feed the baby at least every three hours. Even if they fall back asleep or only eat a little you should still try because that is the best way to keep a good milk supply. If you are constantly engorged then your body will slow milk production and make less and less milk until there is none.

That is what I have been doing and it seems to be working pretty well. Plus to me it really starts to hurt if I have to much milk. I wake him up he should eat and mommy wants to feel better. (The stupid $60 pump DH bought at Target with the last GC $ quit working after one use and he lost the receipt, but he said the receipt said it could only be returned if it was unopened. Mad ) She also said to try to nurse at both breasts at every feeding so nurse one side, burp, then the other. Sometimes he only nurses one or two minutes on the second side so then I start him on that side at the next feeding.

That is only during the day, I have been going to bed about midnight and I nurse him and then he sleeps until about 6 am. Then I start with the approximate three hours feedings all through the day. Yup all I do is nurse and change diapers and try to keep up with the mess.

Well, I'm biased, but heck yeah, he's cute!! I put up a ton of new photos, esp. on his one month b-day. If anyone wants to check them out, it's: http://andreasjohnsonhofer.shutterfly.com

I get confused; I've talked to several different lactation consultants and it seems like I get different advice from them, plus from the books I've been reading. What you're saying makes sense, but then most of them say you should feed "on demand" and if my guy isn't "demanding" then should I feed him anyway? He's so feisty with me that it's really not fun to force the issue.

I am so jealous about your 6 hours of sleep!! But the rest sounds just like my life. nod

I know it is really confusing. I think that is why so many moms have such a hard time figuring it all out. Plus each baby & mom is different so it makes it all the harder to figure out. I wouldn't say try hard make him eat (it's sad when they get mad and arch away) just wake him up and offer it. See if he latches on and eats. There have been many times I start feeling very full & leaky and he hasn't seemed that hungry or he is asleep and I just try to nurse him anyway. Sometimes he will nurse really well and others times he takes a few sips and falls back asleep. I figure if he is hungry he will go ahead and eat and if not then he won't.

I am totally loving the 6 hours of sleep most nights but it has only been the last week. I am starting to feel human again. He is 10 weeks old now and I was reading after two months many newborns are able to sleep that long.

SB~ sounds like you are doing a GREAT job. Kuddos to you for making it this far mama!

I was in the mall and quietly tucked in the corner when an older lady came to me (obviously saw me kinda struggling) and said "oh honey, I can't tell you how nice it is to see a mother breastfeeding." It made me feel so good, then I explained I was getting used to the whole thing.

Her response was "Well remember, you are learning to be a Mommy and your baby is learning to be a baby. You both have to figure it out together, and that only comes with time sweetie. You will both get it soon, just hang in there."

Best advice I had heard...learn together hug

ETA~ my Madelyn Grace is 11 months old and never slept through the night. I'm jealous of some of your cooperative babies on here.
