The 8 channel NVR 8 camera deal
Q-see / Dahua OEM 8-Channel 4K NVR w/ 2TB HDD (8) 4K Ultra HD Bullet Cameras (QCK81-8HF-2) $720

update:
Look for the Dahua OEM junction box PFA121 to go with these cameras. Q-see may also have accessories ( update I found none on their website ). That will help protect the connections from the environment.
Note the lorex boxes for "4 screw" base cameras are Dahua OEM PFA121, so they will also work see part numbers ACJNCD4BKB, S1JF2G, ACJNCD4B
Junction boxes are not required, but very nice if you can not stuff the cabling back into the wall / soffit

yes. One of these the 16 channel one w/16 cameras, or one of the other ones.
As many bells and whistles as possible for an NVR setup that does cost a fortune.

Blue Iris - many ipcamtalk members prefer it over NVRs. You will need a beefy i7 with a newer chip to handle the compute though.
What you can do is setup a dual recorder situation, this gets a bit advanced - but the idea is simple, on your network the streams are multicast and any recorder can pick them up.
I have not done it, so I do not fully know the implementation details.
In general the NVRs have a lot of features and functionality - but do take some time to figure out how to use them.

I would go with the larger NVR - it should have more compute power.
