Imo they expect you to add another matching stick and increases their profit.
But upgrades are supposed to be over time, not immediately to get the performance you expect of the hardware. Especially with 16gb, now I'd have to invest another $100 to get dual channel when I wouldn't need 32gb or get a set of 16gb dual channel and sell off the original stick. Just so arbitrary.
It's a mobile issue, not a desktop issue. Involves CPU/GPU frequency/usage in a ton of laptop chassis's.
