Since google is disabling ad blockers in chrome and you can't use an alternative browser on a chrome OS device without using android and/or linux support (if its even available) and (slowly) run a linux or android version of something other than chrome, folks should be scratching chromebooks and chromeboxes off their shopping list unless you want ten million ads popping up on every page you visit.
Google generally supports these for about 3 years from when newly introduced. There is a way to install a chrome os 3rd party open source OS on it, but it involves opening up the device, removing a write protect screw, jumping through some hoops a tech challenged person would struggle with, etc. And as far as I know, the 3rd party chrome OS's don't auto update so every time a new version is released you have to do it over again. Someone correct me if thats not the case.

You can also run linux on some models and I heard some stuff about people fiddle faddling to get windows to run on it, but it'll run at a fraction of the speed of chrome OS.

Note: I use almost exclusively chrome devices excepting one windows box I keep for a few windows only apps and I feel this move by google to drop support for ad blockers and dropping support for perfectly good hardware to be a hard stop for me to continue buying chrome OS devices. Windows updates 8 year old machines and some even older.

I have 3 i5/4GB samsung chromeboxes they discontinued last year that are beasts. Writing this from an i7 chromebox that loses support in a couple of months.

With billions in their pockets, google should be able to do better than this.

Looks like a good deal. I'd be on it if was in the market for one. Pretty much checks every box for me.

Bought this from bestbuy last month. Really nice EXCEPT the keyboard lettering is too light and cant see it when theres overhead lights. The keys are a shiny gray causing reflections and making the letters invisible. I returned it because of this. Btw, it was $335 for open box at bb.

Picked one up on eBay for this price about a week ago, arriving tomorrow. Chrome Unboxed did a great comparison versus the new Asus C434 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OTov27PmcAI

Good deal and considering this for a college bound kid.

Anyone know if there issues with Chromebook OS being EOF and can Windows be installed after that?

I see other <$100 Chromebook threads talking about Google not supporting upgrades after a certain point.

Picked one up for myself. I'll report in on the refurb quality if mine comes in before the sale ends. I've used the variant of this machine with only 4GB of ram and 32GB of storage. It's quite a nice machine (if a bit on the heavy side), and I haven't seen that lesser model for any less than $400 new.

ChromeOS updates are supported on this device until Jun 2024. You can look up the EOL for updates for any device here:

Don't think you're going to be able to install windows on one of these, but I think you could put together your own linux or chromium os image and install that.

If you're near a MicroCenter, you may want to look at this Asus with more storage, easily upgrade-able, a lower price, and Windows 10:

$239, if you can find an Open Box.

And multiple reports of a lousy trackpad.

Glad the first thing I do with a new laptop is add a USB mouse. (I've got a case of them in my basement form a Staples price mistake a few years back)

The ram cant be upgraded. I find 4gb ram to be very limiting imo. This hp i had for several months from the open box bestbuy deal i picked up for $330. I like eveything about it except the weight.

Which laptop are you talking about RE ungradeable? I put a 16gb stick into the MC Asus, and it's running dual channel just fine at 20gb total.
